The veteran artist unspools lessons he learned from following the King!

1917 to 2017: 100 years of Kirby.

Join us this month to celebrate Jack “King” Kirby’s 100th birthday by learning about the characters and stories he created that changed comics forever. To commemorate Jack’s centennial, we’ve sat down with the modern-day creators he influenced—and the decades of work he gifted us all.

Jack Kirby clearly influenced many creators in the American comics world, but his books also spawned fans all over the world. Count Carlos Pacheco as one such devotee.

Growing up in Spain in the 1970s, Pacheco wound up getting a front row seat for many of Kirby’s classic 60s stories because of the delay in publishing practices. That experience led directly into his desire to work in the same medium, something he’s been doing for years now, including impressive runs on FANTASTIC FOUR, UNCANNY INHUMANS and, currently, CABLE.

We spoke with Pacheco about becoming a Kirby fan, learning lessons from the master, and looking back to the original work when taking on new projects.

Marvel.com: Do you remember your first experience with Jack Kirby’s artwork and how it hit you?

Carlos Pacheco: Jack Kirby opened the Marvel Comics Universe doorway [for me] back in the early 70s; Marvel comics were published 10 years later in Spain so in some ways I belong culturally to the first fan generation. I was there from the beginning. Not exactly the very first day but very close.

I was hooked on Kirby and Marvel at first sight; I never saw anything like that, never saw such a display of power and strength, and the way he depicted a world bigger than life, never. I was a comic fan before this; Jean Giraud, Uderzo, or Carlos Giménez were my idols when I was a kid and Kirby gained a top position in my personal mythology from the very first minute.

Marvel.com: It sounds like his style was something that captivated you right away.

Carlos Pacheco: Yes, definitely. Kirby was the base for every Marvel artist. He has been the ground where everybody seeded his personal artistic style, professionals or fans. The character designs, technology, angles, shots, points of view came from Kirby then. And don’t forget the world famous Kirby Dots!

Marvel.com: As an artist, were there certain tricks or elements of penciling that you learned from looking at his work?

Carlos Pacheco: Of course, overall, what I’ve mentioned, but there is the main rule of what for years was the Marvel Comics style: the use of the initial to final movement pose. The energy of those Marvel comics came from the application of this rule that came from Jack. No in-between positions!

Marvel.com: Did you ever have a chance to meet Jack at a show or something along those lines?

Carlos Pacheco: No, unfortunately, I never had the chance of meeting him. I started to be a part of Marvel just a few month before he passed away. I remember the day [former Marvel staffer] Suzanne Gaffney phoned me to give me such a sad news.

Marvel.com: What was it like stepping into his shoes a bit when drawing FANTASTIC FOUR?

Carlos Pacheco: Oh. My. I wasn’t worthy! Again, I can’t forget the day I received a call asking me to wrap the FF original run just before Heroes Reborn. I never felt such a responsibility. Too young and too scared!

Marvel.com: When you work on X-Men books, do you ever go back to those first several issues that Kirby drew for inspiration or reference?

Carlos Pacheco: Yes! Particularly for the X-MEN # -1 issue, where we had Magneto, Wanda, and Pietro before becoming official members of the Brotherhood and Asteroid M. I had to revisit those issues to capture the Kirby look, in some ways. Don’t forget that this issue is placed immediately before UNCANNY X-MEN #1.

Marvel.com: With AVENGERS FOREVER, you and writer Kurt Busiek played with all sorts of characters from throughout Marvel’s history. Did that lead you to any Kirby books you hadn’t been familiar with before that?

Carlos Pacheco: I devoured every Kirby—and the rest of Marvel—book! But it was a wonderful chance to revisit some books that I read long ago. Just take a glance at RAWHIDE KID, TWO-GUN KID or SGT. FURY, etc. We wanted to have them there one way or another.

Marvel.com: How was it digging into the world of Attilan, its characters and history, when you worked on UNCANNY INHUMANS?

Carlos Pacheco: The Inhumans are, to me, probably the best Kirby designs for Marvel. From Black Bolt to Lockjaw they are Kirby 100%: power, elegance and weirdness all together. It was fantastic to be involved with these great characters.

Cullen Bunn kicks off the newest Venom crossover!

The crossover between X-MEN: BLUE and VENOM starts here!

Spinning out of the aftermath of VENOMVERSE, a new threat looms over all that the mutant’s hold dear. In response, Marvel Girl, Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, and Angel must team up with an unlikely ally—Venom! On January 24, Eddie Brock teams up with the Children of the Atom in writer Cullen Bunn and artist Edgar Salazar‘s X-MEN: BLUE ANNUAL #1!

We spoke with Bunn about what to expect from this show-stopping story.

Marvel.com: Where does this Annual fall in the timeline of the current X-MEN: BLUE series?

Cullen Bunn: The “Poison-X” story takes place some time after Thanos discovers our universe in VENOMVERSE. The Poisons have been working quietly, but quickly, making some dastardly preparations. Of course, the X-Men know nothing of this. They are drawn into this adventure because of the Starjammers. Cyclops learns that his father (Corsair) and the rest of the Starjammers have gotten themselves into hot water involving alien symbiotes. That lures the X-Men into space, and that gets them to bring Venom with them as a kind of subject matter expert.

All this, of course, couldn’t come at a worse time. The X-Men have just returned from their home timeline and are reeling from the repercussions of that trip, and they are right in the middle of investigating the Mothervine conspiracy.

Marvel.com: Who are the Poisons and what do they want?

Cullen Bunn: Imagine a weak, fragile creature…a being with no real power whatsoever, a creature at the bottom of the food chain because it’s not that smart and not that strong. Then, it discovers it can be extremely powerful with no real effort! This creature takes that power and uses it to gain more power. All the while, it has this complex because it knows it was always weak and ineffectual, and now it’s angry it ever felt that way in the first place and wants to vent that rage on the rest of the world.

Poisons have discovered that they are the perfect hosts for alien symbiotes. They have also learned that if they take a symbiote that is bonded with a super-powered individual, they gain all those powers as well. Now they’ve been combing time and space, using these symbiotes as weapons to help them gain even more power. They’re bullies and conquerors, but deep down they are terrified of losing what strength they have. That makes them very dangerous.

Marvel.com: And what can you tell us about Mothervine?

Cullen Bunn: Mothervine is already appearing in the pages of X-MEN: BLUE. It is a formula that Miss Sinister discovered in the DNA of mutants from the Ultimate Universe, and it appears to be granting secondary mutations to those exposed to it. There also seem to be some pretty severe side effects. But Miss Sinister—along with Bastion, Havok, and the White Queen—appear to have a plan for Mothervine. We don’t know exactly what they’re doing, but Magneto wants to know in a major way…

Marvel.com: How does Eddie Brock interact with the Blue team—and what problems does this team-up present?

Cullen Bunn: Venom wants nothing to do with the X-Men and their adventures through space. The X-Men, of course, won’t take no for an answer so they do what X-Men do in situations like this: they try to kidnap him.

You could say that Eddie and the X-Men get off on the wrong foot, but over the course of this story, they start to develop an understanding and even a friendship. I feel like Venom and Cyclops will be friends for a long while after this.

Marvel.com: How do the nuances of Edgar Salazar’s style bring this story to life?

Cullen Bunn: Edgar has to balance mystery and horror and symbiotes and science fiction in this Annual. We’re in a full-blown science fiction space opera here, and he does a tremendous job of setting us up! I always loved Cosmic X-Men stories as a reader, so I love seeing what Edgar is doing with that kind of tale.

Marvel.com: What’s it been like to write Venom again?

Cullen Bunn: Writing Venom is always a lot of fun. This time around is a little different for me, though, because we’re getting into the symbiote’s head a lot more than I’ve done before. We have internal symbiote monologue and symbiote dialogue, so that’s interesting for me. And having Eddie interact with characters like the X-Men shows a different side of his personality.

Marvel.com: X-MEN: BLUE and VENOM have very different tones—was it difficult to combine those two worlds for this crossover?

Cullen Bunn: To some degree, yes. There were challenges in making this story true to both Venom and the X-Men. In the end, though, every creative team brings their own tone to these characters. I think I’ve struck the right balance of VENOM story and X-MEN story, but I’m also creating a different tone that works with these characters as a whole.

Marvel.com: Can you give us any hints about what the implications of this storyline will be moving forward?

Cullen Bunn: Wow. I don’t know. Well, VENOMIZED has already been announced, so we now know that the Poisons are coming to Earth. Venom and the X-Men will be involved in that story, so Poison-X serves as a prologue of sorts.

I’ll also say this: this story has some bleak moments and hits the X-Men right where it hurts the worst.

Marvel is proud to announce the next generation of gifted artists for this year’s Young Guns program!

Originally launched in 2004, each year’s Young Guns selections represent the best and brightest early-career artists in the comic book industry. Previous Young Guns have left their mark through some of Marvel’s greatest heroes, with alumni like Jim Cheung, Steve McNiven, Leinil Yu, Daniel Acuña, David Marquez, Sara Pichelli, and many more drawing some of Marvel’s biggest events and launching groundbreaking new series.

“I still clearly remember the launch of Marvel’s original Young Guns campaign over a decade ago, crafted as an innovative way to recognize and promote the upcoming artists we believed in—and knew would one day be superstars!” says C.B. Cebulski, Editor-in-Chief of Marvel. “From its inception, Young Guns has always been about living up to Marvel’s long legacy of identifying and hiring unique and groundbreaking talent to give our fans the best looking comics on the stands. Spanish artist Pepe Larraz penciled The Mighty Thor, previously having illustrated stories in anthologies such as Web of Spider-Man, Marvel Adventures Super Heroes and X-Men: To Serve and Protect. A rising star, Larraz pitted ’90s rivals against each other in Deadpool vs. X-Force and worked on Wolverine & the X-Men before venturing into a galaxy far, far away with Kanan—then back to the Marvel Universe again with Uncanny Avengers.

Spanish artist Javier Garrón studied architecture before his work on webcomics and blogs got the attention of the American comics industry. Garrón made his Marvel debut with Cyclops in 2014, which led to work on the “Black Vortex” event crossover between New X-Men and Guardians of the Galaxy. Future work included Legendary Star-Lord, the IvX event, and the spot of lead artist on Secret Warriors.

Marco Checchetto early contributions to the revival of Marvel Comics Presents revealed him as one of the industry’s top new talents. Checchetto has made his mark on both the Marvel Universe—with runs on Amazing Spider-Man, Daredevil and Punisher—and a galaxy far, far away, with Star Wars: The Screaming Citadel, Star Wars: Captain Phasma, and the post-Return of the Jedi thriller Star Wars: Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens – Shattered Empire.

Artist and writer Aaron Kuder cut his teeth in the comics industry working on the New York Times best-selling book The Armory Wars and Key of Z, both with Claudio Sanchez from Evil Ink Comics. After work at DC on books such as Action Comics, Kuder returned to Marvel for an exclusive agreement in 2016 with work on top-tier titles such as the X-Men-shattering Death of X and All-New Guardians of the Galaxy.

If you’ve read any Marvel series since 2009, chances are it featured a cover from artist Michael Del Mundo at some point. Del Mundo’s artwork has fronted such well-known series as Amazing Spider-Man, Vision, and Invincible Iron Man. After delivering gallery-standard illustrations page after page in Elektra, he brought his unique talents to Secret Wars tie-in Weirdworld and its subsequent All-New, All-Different Marvel relaunch, and Marvel’s flagship title Avengers.

Russell Dauterman is best known as the artist of Marvel’s Thor comics.  Written by Jason Aaron and starring Jane Foster as Thor, the lengthy run has become a best-selling, Eisner-nominated series.  Previous work includes such titles as CyclopsNightwing, and Supurbia.  Russell has also designed characters and created covers for various Marvel, BOOM! Studios, DC, Valiant, and Image titles.  Outside of comics, Russell has illustrated children’s books and worked as a costume illustrator in the film industry, most notably on Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The First Avenger.  Russell is currently continuing his character-defining run drawing The Mighty Thor.

Relive T'Challa's historic debut and tag along for his first groundbreaking adventures!

For more than 50 years, the Black Panther has stood at the forefront on the Marvel Universe. With T’Challa appearing on the big screen this year in both Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” take a look back at over five decades worth of comic book adventures for the King of Wakanda!

The famous Fantastic Four found themselves amazed by the gift of a technologically advanced flying vessel in 1966’s FANTASTIC FOUR #52, a present from the people Wakanda and an invitation to visit their small African nation. Upon landing in a bio-organic mechanical forest, the super hero family fended off a seeming attack by a black-clad individual, only to discover him as T’Challa, the leader of Wakanda and known as their champion, the Black Panther.

In FANTASTIC FOUR #53, the Panther explained to Reed Richards and the others that his country’s greatest asset, the sound-absorbing metal vibranium, existed only within its borders. He further detailed a recent attempt by the evil Ulysses Klaw to steal the metal, a fact then made all-too clear by Klaw’s attack on T’Challa and the FF. The heroes held the poacher off, and Klaw disappeared into his own sonic device.

Hotheaded Johnny Storm wanted to visit his Inhuman girlfriend in FANTASTIC FOUR #54, so T’Challa lent him a Wakandan flying craft to rush to the Hidden Land. There, the Human Torch became embroiled in a dangerous fight against Prestor John and the Evil Eye. T’Challa also gifted Reed with pure vibranium bands in FANTASTIC FOUR #56 to defeat Klaw again and made his first 1967 appearance dealing with yet another flying ship in FANTASTIC FOUR #60 when the team returned to America and Doctor Doom stole the Silver Surfer’s cosmic power to try and take over the world.

Upon an expedition to Panther Island in FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #5, the Black Panther and his Wakandan soldiers discovered both the intrepid Inhumans and evidence of the Psycho-Man’s underground headquarters. T’Challa joined with the Fantastic Four soon after to turn the tide against the emotion-controlling villain and send him packing back to the Microverse.

Captain America never expected a summons from far-off exotic Wakanda, but one arrived in 1968’s TALES OF SUSPENSE #97 to bring the Black Panther’s plea for Cap to help him against an invasion by mysterious forces.

Cap’s Wakandan flying craft came under attack on his way to the African country in TALES OF SUSPENSE #98, just the first salvo in T’Challa’s war with Baron Zemo and the villain’s orbiting solar ray projector. It took timely assistance from Agent 13 in TALES OF SUSPENSE #99 to turn the tide against Zemo, but Cap and the Panther still fought hard to win the day in CAPTAIN AMERICA #100.

After things settled down a bit, Cap called his fellow Avengers back in the States to strongly suggest they consider T’Challa for membership among Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in AVENGERS #51. When the Panther flew to their New York headquarters to meet the famous team in AVENGERS #52 he discovered a room full of seemingly deceased heroes. It took being arrested and squaring off against the dreaded Grim Reaper for T’Challa to win his spurs as the newest member of the Avengers.

With little time to settle in, the Black Panther found himself at odds with the Magneto-controlled X-Men in AVENGERS #53 and skirmishes with both Cyclops and the Beast. Once the confusion cleared, he stood with his teammates in battle against his old foe Klaw and the new Masters of Evil in AVENGERS #54, and the revelation of stone-cold Ultron-5 behind the scenes of the attack in AVENGERS #55.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

The Panther joined with Captain America to travel back in time in AVENGERS #56 to solve the mystery of Cap’s partner Bucky during World War II, but that stood as only an appetizer for the adventure of meeting the synthezoid Vision in AVENGERS #57. Later, T’Challa helped welcome the Vision into the ranks of the team in AVENGERS #58, as well as find himself baffled by the appearance of newcomer Yellowjacket and the disappearance of Hank Pym in AVENGERS #59.

Jessica learned Spidey’s secret identity in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #4, and Ben and Peter buried the mystery skeleton in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #411. The wallcrawler faced a new and improved Hobgoblin in SPIDER-MAN #68, fell under his assault in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #234, and turned the tables on the criminal in SPIDER-MAN #69. Ben also beat a murder rap in SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED #12, and witnessed the latest return of the Molten Man in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #5.

Questions concerning a corporation called Multivex attracted Spidey’s curiosity in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #412, Mysterio shrunk him down to bug-size in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #413, and the deadly Delilah brought new dangers in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #414. Hammerhead vied with Don Fortunato for the Kingpin’s criminal empire in SPIDER-MAN #70, and wound up in the same hospital as a very ill Peter in SPIDER-MAN #41. Jessica Carradine became even more conflicted over Ben in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #6, Ben believed Peter’s sickness stemmed from clone degeneration in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #7, and the Looter stole high-tech super villain weaponry to use for himself in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #8. During the Onslaught event, Spidey clashed with Sentinels in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #415 and SPIDER-MAN #72, then pondered a world without its heroes in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #416.

Peter’s condition worsened in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #237, a more monstrous Lizard tore up the landscape in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #238, and the original Lizard arrived in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #239 to put an end to it all. The webslinger teamed up with Luke Cage and Iron Fist in SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED #13, mixed it up with Swarm in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #9 and SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #10, and once again landed in the middle of battling crimelords in SPIDER-MAN #73 and SPIDER-MAN #74.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

Recovered from his sickness, Peter donned a spare mask to help Ben versus the Host in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #417, put his head together with his double for a serious talk in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #240, and stood up against Gaunt while Mary Jane went into unexpected labor in SENSATIONAL SPIDER-MAN #11. While the two heroes battled Gaunt, the baby sadly arrived stillborn in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #418, and Peter faced the real culprit behind all of his and Ben’s misery, the long thought dead Norman Osborn, in SPIDER-MAN #75. In that debacle, Peter once more took on the role of Spider-Man when Ben lost his life to Osborn’s treachery.

Later, Peter and Mary Jane dealt with not only the loss of Ben but also their child in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #241 while the Chameleon waited offstage to reveal his next scheme.

The sound rings across the universe…and can only mean one thing: the return of Wolverine!

He’s been popping up in some of your favorite books lately; holding an Infinity Stone, keeping his secrets close. But his return has been an unsolved mystery—until this April, when writer Charles Soule and artist David Marquez reveal the timeline of events that’ll lead to Logan’s shocking return with THE HUNT FOR WOLVERINE: ALPHA #1!

The 40-page issue, featuring a cover by Steve McNiven, begins the twisted tale of Logan’s reemergence. Then, this May, the story evolves into four different tales from different creative teams, each one containing its own distinct genre and mystery: action/adventure (Adamantium Agenda), horror (Claws of the Killer), dark romance (Mystery in Madripoor) and noir/detective (Weapon Lost.) And it’s all being orchestrated by the man that crafted the “Death of Wolverine” in the first place.

Soule recalls, “Steve McNiven and I took on the incredible task of killing Wolverine back in 2014—it was one of my earliest projects at Marvel, and such a huge opportunity. Intimidating, tricky, all of that—but ultimately, I think we created a book (alongside [inker] Jay Leisten, [colorist] Justin Ponsor and [letterer] Chris Eliopolous) that we’re all really proud of.” He continues, “There’s really only one project that could top it—being part of the story that brings Logan back! THE HUNT FOR WOLVERINE is just the opening chapters of a mystery that will reach all sorts of cool hidden corners of the Marvel Universe, and will tell a story that will hopefully have us looking at Logan in an entirely new way.”

“I’m really looking forward to seeing how fans start to put the pieces together,” says the scribe. “There’s a big payoff coming down the road, and all the interlocking parts of THE HUNT FOR WOLVERINE build to it. The more you read, the more clues you get. It’s really fun—especially since I have a bit of a reputation in X-continuity for knocking off beloved mutants. Prep for the new series by looking back at David Haller’s first appearance!

Every Friday, we use the powers of Marvel Unlimited to look back at the very first appearance of a major character, place, or object that made waves this week.

While fans have been celebrating David Haller’s return to comics in writer Peter Milligan and artist Wilfredo TorresLEGION #1 (out next week!), the character’s presence hasn’t always prompted such a positive response. In Haller’s first appearance, his arrival wasn’t cheered—it was met with dread.

The young man known as Legion debuted in 1985 on the second-to-last page of writer Chris Claremont and artist Bill Sienkiewicz’s NEW MUTANTS #25. Presented as an entry in Moira MacTaggert’s notes on the mutant subjects of Muir Island, the reveal not only gave us our first look at Haller, but a wealth of introductory information.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

He looked like a teenager. He’d been catatonic for half of his life. And he possessed telekinetic and telepathic abilities passed onto him by his father…Charles Xavier. Haller’s mother, Gabrielle, was one of Xavier’s patients when he worked as a therapist. And, despite their relationship, the Professor never knew that David was his son.

In the following issue, David lost control of his powers and blew up part of Moira’s facility. Concerned for the well-being of her mutants, MacTaggert called in Professor X for some assistance. Charles came, and brought Banshee, Warlock, Doug Ramsay, Wolfsbane, and Dani Moonstar with him.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

In his inspection of the Island, Xavier began suspecting foul play when he met Gabrielle Haller there. She explained that David was her son, but held back on telling him the father’s identity. In an attempt to quell the chaos, the world’s most prominent telepath then entered Legion’s mind—but found himself, shockingly, ousted from his mental plane.

Haller’s mindscape proved to be an expansive and potent place. When Xavier returned to Legion’s mind, he found himself in an epic Soul War with one of David’s alternate personalities that’d hijacked one of the young man’s mutant powers. During this battle, Charles also learned of his own connection to the boy.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

After resolving the fight and concluding the mindscape adventure, Charles sat down with David in the real world only to discover that three other personalities all still lived inside Haller’s head. Saddled with such a complex and fragile mental state, Legion received word from his father that he would have his support as he grew older. Despite this promise, Charles and David were set for a challenging father-son relationship in the many years ahead.

FLASH FORWARD

A decade after making his first appearance, David Haller changed all of reality in a story called “Legion Quest” that ran through X-FACTOR #109, UNCANNY X-MEN #320#321, X-MEN #40#41 and CABLE #20. In that crossover, David decided that Magneto’s madness was the source of much of the world’s trouble, so he traveled back in time to kill him. Ultimately, however, Haller ended up accidentally killing his father instead, kickstarting the “Age of Apocalypse” storyline in the process. That event eventually led to the X-Men sending Bishop back in time so that he’d stop the wrongful assassination. In the process, Bishop stabbed Legion with his own psi-blade, sending them both spinning into Limbo.

After 10 years and 189 issues, Slott will move from the adventures of Peter Parker to Tony Stark.

The end of an era is here, as Don Slott will be ending his epic run on THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN with issue #801 – as the writer prepares to begin guiding the next chapter of Tony Stark’s life in the pages of IRON MAN.

Slott spoke to Vulture.com about this big change, saying, of his decision to leave AMAZING SPIDER-MAN after a decade of writing the series (and 189 issues!), “I could always see the next furlong, I could always see what was ahead. Like, Get this far and I’ll make it to the next wave of ‘Brand New Day’ writers, then, ‘If I make it this far I get to one out of every five issues of AMAZING [ever published]. If I get it to this far, I get to [issue No.] 700.’ And so on. So I kept having these benchmarks to hit. And then I realized, once you hit ten years and then issue 800, the next benchmarks were way too far away. [Laughs.] So I always knew that was the zone.”

He goes on to explain that he’ll likely need to adjust to not telling Spider-Man stories, because having written the book for so long, “There are days where everything gets seen through the Spider-Man filter first. If I’m walking down the streets in New York and I notice something, I’d go, ‘Oh, how would Spider-Man deal with that?’ It’s a reflex muscle in the back of your head. Or you read a news story. Something happens and you go, ‘How would Spider-Man deal with that? What is that? What if that was Mysterio?’ When you do this for ten years, that’s just the way you’re wired.”

As for his new gig on IRON MAN, Slott tells Vulture, “I’m all excited. They’d asked me to do IRON MAN a while back, but by then I was at [SILVER] SURFER and I had Spidey and I was already overcommitted, so it kept gnawing at me. Like, ‘Oh, man. I really do want to do Iron Man. This would be fun.’ And when that came around again, it was like, ‘Okay, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I want IRON MAN. I want this. I want this really bad.'”

Regarding his thoughts on Tony Stark, Slott explained, “Reed Richards explores the universe. He wants to know everything and go everywhere. Tony Stark builds the future. It’s not that he’s not out to discover the next big thing. But he’s gonna take his own two hands and he’s gonna build where he wants to go, or what he wants to do. He looks at a challenge and goes, ‘How do I machine my way out of this?’”

Slott promises, “There will be a very unique cast in this book of characters: Iron Man characters you love and Marvel characters that you haven’t seen folded into the Iron Man cast.”
