Go in-depth on the Marvel additions to the hit game, plus the latest on 'Playmation'!
“Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition” may be brimming with characters from a galaxy far, far away, but the toys-to-life sequel won’t put a Force choke-hold on fresh Marvel content. In fact, Hulkbuster—the franchise’s largest figure to date—lands like a pavement-buckling fist this November.
The massive collectible toy—which makes last edition’s sizable Hulk sculpt look comparatively small, leverages the deeper combat and gameplay mechanics of 3.0. As discovered during a recent hands-on demo at D23 Expo, this means fans can not only unleash basic button-mashing move-sets, but also devastating combos, and screen-clearing special attacks. The latter, unlocked on an expansive skill tree, prove especially impressive; with “Tractor Beam,” for example, players can pull targets toward themselves, while the aptly named “Jackhammer Punch” pummels enemies into the ground. Last but not least, unleash “Missile Salvo,” a powerful special that simultaneously unloads a dozen powerful projectiles from Hulkbuster’s back.
As cool as Iron Man’s Hulk-squashing suit may be, Ultron’s villainous skills come off equally slick. Arriving alongside the Hulkbuster figure this fall, the adamantium-made menace features an array of standard and special attacks. Among the former, the ability to fly and deliver foe-frying laser projectiles, while the latter includes “Perilous Parry,” allowing Ultron to defend incoming attacks by pushing aggressors backward. The star of his skill-tree, however, has to be the aptly-named “Command Performance,” a minion-summoning move that essentially floods the battlefield with mini-Ultrons.
In addition to utilizing this powerful pair in the do-it-yourself Toy Box mode, players can bring both figures into the dedicated Expansion Games, “Toy Box Takeover” and “Toy Box Speedway.” The first: a dungeon crawler-like action game; “Speedway”—which includes a “Guardians of the Galaxy”-themed track—a rubber-burning kart racer. Best of all, Ultron, Hulkbuster, and all previous Marvel characters will be playable in the next Marvel Play Set. Dubbed “Marvel Battlegrounds,” the new standalone adventure, arriving next spring, also supports four-player cooperative play. Beyond that, details on “Battlegrounds” remain locked down tighter than Stark Tower, but based on the title alone it sounds like epic combat encounters will be a primary focus.
“Disney Infinity 3.0” won’t be the only interactive entertainment platform receiving a super-powered update. “Playmation,” the innovative experience that blurs the line between digital and physical play, adds some green to its launch line-up. On top of the previously-announced Avengers starter pack—which includes an Iron Man-inspired Repulsor Gear motion-sensing device—a Gamma Gear version lets fans harness the pummeling power of the Hulk. Coupled with the clever platform’s connected “smart” toys, the wearable tech assists players in tackling missions and battling baddies. The enormous green fists also pack quite a punch, delivering Ground Slams, Thunder Claps, and a variety of other enemy-crushing combos.
Whether your hands clutch tightly around a gamepad or don a pair of big, green fists, “Disney Infinity 3.0” and “Playmation” Gamma Gear will fulfill all your super hero fantasies this fall!
