Expand your roster of Earth's Mightiest Heroes with exciting DLC!
The team at Traveller’s Tales has been hard at work crafting new and exciting DLC releases for “LEGO Marvel’s Avengers.” While several packs remain on the horizon—including fan favorites like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Black Panther—we’ve already seen three new packs released. Captain Marvel, the Masters of Evil, and Ant-Man have joined the already incredible cast of characters, and they’ve brought new levels and vehicles along with them.
To get the lowdown on DLC past and future, we grabbed some time with Bill Rosemann, Marvel Games’ Creative Director, and Arthur Parsons, Game Director at Traveller’s Tales.
Marvel.com: The first three pieces of DLC have hit for “LEGO Marvel’s Avengers,” bringing us heroes and villains from cosmic to compact and even some classics. With so much of the Marvel pantheon available to include, what brought these characters to the forefront?
Bill Rosemann: For our six DLCs, we worked closely with our friends at TT Games to select characters that would best celebrate the wide-reaching tapestry of the Avengers, appeal to the most amount of players, and provide a unique new area of the Marvel Universe to explore. So we have a mix of heroes leaping out of existing movies or TV shows—such as Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.—and rising stars who are soon to explode into the worldwide spotlight—such as Doctor Strange, Black Panther and Captain Marvel. As for the Masters of Evil, well who is brave enough to argue with the Avengers’ longtime #1 rivals that they don’t deserve their own DLC? Take them all together and they bring an impressive list of heroes and villains who have either teamed with or clashed with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to the game’s already deep roster, expanding the battlefield from the Microverse to Wakanda.
Arthur Parsons: During development of “LEGO Marvel’s Avengers” we had a huge amount of fun picking a diverse and exciting roster of characters, and when it came to picking our DLC characters we had just as much fun. There were a couple of packs that we really wanted to include; Ant-Man because we all loved the movie so much and wanted to feature that, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. because we are all huge AoS fans, and who wouldn’t want to see those characters brought to life in LEGO form! Masters of Evil was something that us here at TT and our colleagues at Marvel games both wanted to bring to life, and we all agreed that we should use AVENGERS #6 as a basis for that content, such an amazing comic that we wanted to bring that storyline and those characters to a whole new audience. Citizen V is one of my favorite characters, so the Thunderbolts was again a very easy selection for the DLC packs, and then to make up the rest of the DLC content we wanted to explore characters that are going to be huge in the coming months. As such Doctor Strange, Black Panther, and Captain Marvel joined the DLC roster; what better way to get excited about these characters than to explore a little bit of their back story, and as such our DLC content was complete. We are all incredibly excited about the DLC content we have delivered and think that every single character has been given the care and attention that they deserve. We have brought together the best of the best to create a huge roster of characters and content. Marvel fans of all ages will be delighted with the main game, and then truly blown away with the extra content.
Marvel.com: The Captain Marvel and Masters of Evil packs come with their own levels; what new adventures can we take these characters on?
Arthur Parsons: The Masters of Evil pack is a modern retelling of the classic AVENGERS #6 storyline, and given that comic was the world’s first introduction to the Masters of Evil it was only fitting for us to take the player there; our chance to introduce players to this epic group of villains. Our Captain Marvel pack is a brief introduction to Carol Danvers becoming Captain Marvel, and features a few of her arch-enemies—a one stop LEGO introduction to an amazing character, it was a real pleasure to be able to explore these characters and be able to then tell their stories in the game.
Marvel.com: The newest pack, exclusive to PlayStation consoles, includes characters from Ant-Man, as well as a new level. But the big surprise was the reveal that Michael Peña had returned to voice Luis and provide narration for the new content. What was it like getting to work with him to bring the authentic feel of the film to “LEGO Marvel’s Avengers”?
Arthur Parsons: We all loved the Ant-Man movie, and were really looking forward to working on this DLC pack for the game. We all agreed that in order to make the pack as authentic as possible we wanted Michael Peña to reprise his role and take the player on a journey through Pym Technologies to battle Darren Cross. Working with Michael was a real pleasure and so much fun, and it was great to have Michael really bring his Luis mini figure to life. Playing through that level is a really immersive experience, being able to get Scott to put the Ant-Man suit on and shrink down to battle enemies and solve puzzles, and the jokes from Michael while you play are terrific. It’s such an entertaining pack, and that recording session was a truly memorable experience. We hope everyone that plays this pack sees just how much fun we had making it.
Marvel.com: Out of the three packs players have seen so far, what new character or vehicle has been your personal favorite?
Bill Rosemann: I’ve been a big proponent of Marvel’s Women of Power event, so I’m hyped to see that Captain Marvel is the star of her own DLC. This may be some players’ first meeting with Carol Danvers, so everyone at TT Games and Marvel Games sweated the details to make sure it was accessible, awesome, and packed with fun elements, like Captain Marvel’s very own sky cycle! Best of all, this DLC marks the LEGO debut of the pulverizing Poundcakes, the powerful pro-wrestler turned super villain who just happens to be a personal fave of Marvel Games’ own Isabel Hsu.
Arthur Parsons: With so many characters in these packs it’s really hard to know which character is my own personal favorite; Baron Zemo is brilliant, but then again so is Captain Marvel. However for me I think that Kang the Conqueror probably tops the list. When everyone plays the DLC packs they’ll have so much content to play, and so many characters to experiment with, all of them with new moves and abilities.
Marvel.com: The last three DLC releases from the season pass are due later this Spring. Can you tell us any more about what they’ll be bringing to the table?
Bill Rosemann: What’s so cool about the remaining three DLCs is that they will not only take players on tour around the Marvel Universe, but also through the variety of stories that Marvel can deliver. From the espionage thrills of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to the politically charged adventure of Black Panther to the supernatural shocks of Doctor Strange, the upcoming DLCs show that by embracing and redefining many genres, Marvel can deliver the drama, humor and action that has captivated generations of fans of all ages for over 50 years.
Arthur Parsons: The remaining DLC packs are probably my favorite ones of the season pass. The Doctor Strange pack really is something else, allowing the player to journey to the Dark Dimension as well as inside Sanctum Sanctorum; it’s an absolute joy to play. Battling through Wakanda is also brilliant in the Black Panther pack, with a showdown against Ulysses Klaw the climax of a breathtaking level, then being able to relive a part of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s season 2, travelling to Afterlife and having so many brilliant characters to play with really does make for a fantastic level. Everyone at TT and Marvel Games has had a blast creating this content, and we can’t wait for Marvel fans around the world to enjoy our efforts, thanks to everyone for giving us the chance to take you all on these adventures.
