Coulson and company make the leap from TV to the hit console game!
The latest DLC pack for “LEGO Marvel’s Avengers” brings Daisy, Lincoln, Fitzsimmons, and more to the LEGO adventure from developer Traveller’s Tales. Recruit the agents to your roster, get everybody on the Bus, and relive the thrilling events leading up to the season two finale of the hit TV series “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”
We took this opportunity to get some more time with Arthur Parsons, Game Director at Traveller’s Tales, and chat about the new content.
Marvel.com: This pack brings the fan-favorite “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” characters from the hit TV series into the LEGO Marvel world, along with their own level. What challenges will players face in this new mission?
Arthur Parsons: Those of us involved with this DLC pack are huge fans of the show, as such we decided to base the DLC pack on the events leading up to the season two finale, so players will be faced with exploring Afterlife and rescuing agents, as well as chasing down Jiaying and Daisy. After these epic events we then take the player into a faceoff with Gordon and then Cal Zabo. It’s a really epic level pack featuring so many characters, and we hope that everyone that plays it can see just how much affection from the team went into the pack.
Marvel.com: Jiaying and Gordon are dropping in to a Marvel game for the first time. What was the design process for this pack’s antagonists?
Arthur Parsons: Designing character abilities is a hugely fun part of the overall design process, looking at the characters in detail, what they are known for, what they do within the context of their own show, and then distilling that into something that the player can experience. So with Gordon we had to incorporate his teleportation for the show down with him, and obviously any excuse to re-watch episodes of the show is a great excuse!! In terms of the actual physical design of the characters, our wonderfully talented team looks to effectively take a snapshot of the characters in their most well-known outfit, and then apply this to a LEGO minifigure, and trust me, it is no easy task! Making a minifigure recognisable as a character is not an easy skill, and thankfully our own Agents of TT are up to that task!
Marvel.com: The “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” cast is full of unique and varied characters. While members of the team like Daisy, Agent May, and Lincoln have clear abilities, others like Fitz and Simmons have less evident talents. How did you make each of these new characters shine?
Arthur Parsons: Sometimes it is the characters that don’t have such clearly defined abilities that are the most fun to design, as it definitely exercises the grey matter, but as well gives us freedom to be creative. So for Fitz we gave him his tablet, like the show, that he uses to hit enemies with, he is also able to fix up broken LEGO, as well as locating hidden LEGO using his tablet. Simmons again has abilities that reference the show, so she has Hydra access, scientific beakers she can throw at enemies and the ability to locate hidden LEGO, but as with all characters, little nods to their personalities are introduced in the way they animate. We were meant to have eight characters in this pack, but we all got so excited by bringing “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” to life in LEGO form that we ended up with 13 characters!
Marvel.com: Are any of the “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” actors returning to voice their minifigure-selves?
Arthur Parsons: So we had Clark Gregg voice Phil Coulson in the main “LEGO Marvel’s Avengers game,” and the first person we all thought of to help us tell the story of this pack was the incredible Agent May, Ming-Na Wen, and it was so much fun having her bring things to life for us, it adds a level of authenticity to the pack, just like hearing the TV theme tune does.
Marvel.com: The Bus is remembered fondly by “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” fans, gone too soon from this world, so its addition to “LEGO Marvel’s Avengers” is a welcome sight. Was it an easy decision to bring it in as a vehicle for this pack?
Arthur Parsons: When myself and the team were first throwing around ideas for the season pass content the Bus was the first vehicle on the list for the “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Pack. It is such an iconic vehicle, and such an incredible LEGO build. Our models team completely outdid themselves with it, and players will love flying around in it. We already had iconic vehicles elsewhere in the main game and season pass, so the Bus was definitely the one that HAD to be in the pack.
Marvel.com: Is there more on the horizon? Any new heroes coming to life in LEGO form?
Arthur Parsons: So yes, while we are incredibly excited that the “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pack is finally out in the wild for people to play, it does bring the season pass DLC content to a close and it’s a season pass that myself and the team involved in the game have thoroughly enjoyed creating. We set out to make a brilliantly diverse mixture of content, and really delivered on all fronts, but all great things have to conclude. However yes, we do still have one last piece of content that is yet to arrive; it’s effectively the team’s thank you to all the players that have supported us on this amazing journey—as they always do. I’m sure news on that will arrive shortly, as will the content itself, and we hope that everybody that has played “LEGO Marvel’s Avengers” now, and those that are yet to play it has a huge amount of fun with the characters that are about to arrive.
