The Cap of an alternate 1901 brings his steampunk style to the hit game!
Captain America’s 75th anniversary celebration has hit full swing, and we’re excited to bring you more information on the all-new, alternate-universe Captain America arriving in “Marvel: Avengers Alliance 2.” As the first test subject in this universe’s super-soldier program, enhanced with an ISO-8 powered suit and transforming shield, Jeremiah Rogers provides a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.
We sat down with Lead Game Designer Donovan Kennedy to discuss the creation and design of this new character and to dig into what he brings to “Marvel: Avengers Alliance 2.”
Marvel.com: When the discussions around Cap’s 75th Anniversary began, how did everyone come to the conclusion of creating this new character?
Donovan Kennedy: When we were first approached with the idea of making a new version of Captain America that would be unique to “Marvel: Avengers Alliance 2” and celebrate the 75th anniversary of Cap we jumped at the opportunity. From our short list of archetypes our Art Director, Leigh Kellogg, dove into creating concepts for the most interesting characters. This was really the critical step for us to help pull together the vision of which version of Cap would be the most unique, interesting and engaging for our players.
Marvel.com: What was the design process like for this original character debuting in the game?
Donovan Kennedy: The process really started with searching for a theme that was fun and exciting. I came up with a short list of archetypes that included versions like a Space-Faring Cap, a High-Tech Cap, and a Policeman Cap, but after a few team discussions and some great concept art we decided to go with a Steampunk-style Cap, and it was a fit great as I was looking for a theme that could be supported by pivotal moments in American history. I wrote the outline for a deep background that shows how incursions were first manifested in the American Civil War and helped set this alternate universe on a path that led to massive technology changes, including using ISO-8 as a tool for steam-powered technology that ultimately leads to Captain Jeremiah Rogers donning an experimental ISO-8 powered suit and shield to help Teddy Roosevelt at the Battle of San Juan Hill. And then after the art and the background were settled, the game designers worked to create some very unique abilities to utilize in new ways.
Marvel.com: This marks the fourth Captain America to join the ranks in MAA2. The first three were different iterations of the Steve Rogers version of the character, with their own classes, two Bruisers and a Tactician. What about 1901 Captain America makes him a Tactician over a Bruiser?
Donovan Kennedy: This version of Cap definitely embraces all of the aspects of a classic Tactician. He can completely control the follow of battle, especially when facing free-attack teams, by utilizing an array of team buffs, enemy debuffs—like the first hero to get an AOE bleed attack—and healing. While he can still dish out the damage and lead a strike team he really shines when supporting other heroes like the new Black Panther that will be awarded at the end of June’s PVP tournament.
Marvel.com: How will players be able to unlock him and add him to their team?
Donovan Kennedy: In order to unlock him players will need to complete five event tasks to gain a special Steam-Powered Power Cell. As long as this cell is opened before July 13, Captain America (1901) will be unlocked. The tasks may be easy or hard, but they were all designed to be easily completed within the event time. We really want anyone playing regularly during the anniversary event to gain access to this great new character.
Marvel.com: If a Captain America super-fan started playing the game today, would they still be able to unlock all four variations of Cap that are available?
Donovan Kennedy: Definitely. Original, Age of Ultron, and Civil War Caps are all available by activating Superior Power Cells but the new Cap will only be available for a limited time.
Marvel.com: Of course, Captain America (1901) isn’t the only new addition in this update. What can you tell us about the Autoplay feature coming to the game?
Donovan Kennedy: Autoplay is a great addition to the game. While it’s risky and ill-advised in challenging content including PVP, it can really help us play through Scouting missions and missions needed for trials. And really who doesn’t love to watch a cool battle play out on their phone while they’re “working.” One other thing to mention is the complete overhaul of our store system. It’s a great new tool to offer up items that players are looking for and by popular demand we’ve added the ability to open up to 10 Power Cells at a time—at least for cells that don’t award Heroes. I pay close attention to the forums and Reddit and although the dev team doesn’t post publicly there, I’m always looking for concerns and cool suggestions for improving the gameplay experience.
Marvel.com: PVP Tournament 07 brings along Deathlok as a final reward; what class is he and what abilities will he be sporting?
Donovan Kennedy: Deathlok, not surprisingly, is a Blaster. He’s got quite the array of high-tech weaponry and equipment and managing his ammo will be key to his effectiveness. I won’t reveal too much about how he’ll fit into a team as I think that a lot of the fun in discovering and theory-crafting those ideas [comes] when the abilities are revealed on July 1.
Marvel.com: Anything else you can tell us about Jeremiah Rogers and what he brings to the table in MAA2?
Donovan Kennedy: Aside from him being a cool character with several unique abilities and mechanics, his background and alternate universe, that’s unique to our game, [it] opens the door to potentially introduce other Heroes and Villains. Imagine all the cool versions of ISO-Steam-Powered characters. Who would you like to see? The ideas are endless. Also make sure you check out the great newspaper articles that will be available on our web site. Our writer has really crafted an amazing tale to set the stage for this alternate universe and Captain America (1901).
