Celebrate the success of the Marvel mobile game with a Guardians of the Galaxy event!

The Guardians of the Galaxy roster expands in “Marvel Future Fight!” To celebrate the game’s second anniversary, two new heroes—Agent Venom and Mantis—join the battle while the game’s original Guardians don new uniforms inspired by the films, and finally, Whiplash adds his weapons to your arsenal. And just in time, because you’ll need new gear and fresh teammates to tackle the game’s World Boss Ultimate and Alliance Conquest modes.

We sat down with Minkyun Kim, Development Director at Netmarble Games, to see just what we could learn about the anniversary update.

Marvel.com: This update marks the second anniversary of “Marvel Future Fight;” what are you bringing to the game to celebrate this milestone?

Minkyun Kim: As a huge thank you to all the users who have shown us love, we’ve prepared a variety of events. First, players will have an opportunity to get new Guardians of the Galaxy characters and an exclusive, limited edition Comic Card. Players will also get additional opportunities for various rewards in events such as the seven day check-in.

Marvel.com: The biggest character addition has got to be Mantis; what does she bring to the table?

Minkyun Kim: Mantis, one of the new heroes appearing in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” will also be joining us this update. She mainly attacks with her hands through the use of martial arts. With her unique energy wavelength, she can attack from short or medium-range distances. You’ll be able to feel the thrilling action as you watch her acrobatic martial arts style and energy wavelength attacks.

Also, her ability to find enemy weak points and use of psychic empathy ensures that her teammates get buffs that will help in battle, the idea being that she uses her telepathic powers to communicate enemy weak points to her allies.

Her powerful mind energy and healing powers allow for resistance to debuffs. Her healing touch will be able to give teams an advantage in both team and solo battles.

Marvel.com: Alongside the new team members, players will be able to grab a few new uniforms. Who’s suiting up in new gear?

Minkyun Kim: With the opening of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” we’re introducing brand new uniforms: the [movie-versions] of Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, and the new Groot everybody’s been waiting for! Also, to celebrate the second anniversary of “Marvel Future Fight,” we’ll be introducing a new uniform for our original character, Sharon Rogers.

Mavel.com: A new World Boss mode is coming to “Marvel Future Fight” with this update. What can you tell us about World Boss Ultimate?

Minkyun Kim: There is a difficulty system in Ultimate Mode. As the difficulty goes up, bosses will become stronger, and a player’s characters will be placed in disadvantageous situations. In the higher difficulties, players will be placed in extreme situations never seen before on Original Bosses.

The key to winning will be determined by how detailed and effectively a player upgrades their character. Players will be challenged to constantly reduce their clear times and become the best.

Marvel.com: Outside of increasing their rank, will there be rewards in this mode that differ from the standard World Boss mode?

Minkyun Kim: As you challenge higher difficulties, the rewards will be more gratifying as well.

Rewards will now be proportional to the difficulty level that was challenged. Also, the first time a difficulty level is cleared against a boss, you’ll get a special reward. You can only get a limited amount of rewards per day, but you can always strive for better records and try out new strategies.

Marvel.com: A new PVP feature, Conquest, is coming to Alliances. What new ways can Alliances compete, and what kinds of rewards will they unlock?

Minkyun Kim: In the past, Alliance related content was based around an individual’s fight within the Alliance; Alliance Conquests will now truly be a battle of Alliances. Alliance Conquests will require communication between Alliance members to properly coordinate characters over the map to lead your Alliance to victory. Alliances with the best characters will have an advantage. Through Alliance Conquest, players will unlock Alliance Tokens which can be used to trade for items in the Alliance Shop and to upgrade your characters. Also, depending on your score, your Alliance will also get a cool frame.

Marvel.com: The third year of “Marvel Future Fight” is just beginning. Can you give us a taste of what’s to come?

Minkyun Kim: Looking back on the last two years, we’re grateful to all the players who have supported and loved our game and we know that we’ve had our faults. We’ll work our butts off to make sure that we become a game that is loved by all. Personally, as a fan of Marvel, I’m looking forward to the lineup of Marvel content coming up. We’ll take our own excitement and hopes and endeavor to create more varied content. Through the updates this year, we hope that our players will feel at home and join us to fight the villains of the Marvel Universe.

A different take on the floral colossus hits Battlerealm hard!

Getting psyched for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2”? Want to crush some skulls with a Groot from another reality? Look no further than “Marvel Contest of Champions” and King Groot!

We talked to Kabam Art Director Gabriel Frizzera and QA Analyst Gordon Thornton about the big bad new tree on Battlerealm.

Marvel.com: Oh man who is King Groot and why does he look so terrifying? What happened to our cute baby Groot?

Gabriel Frizzera: Sometimes, if you don’t raise your Baby Groot right, give him love, water, and sunlight, they fall in with the wrong crowd and become an angry, spiky, wasp-spewing tyrant tree. It’s sad but true.

But in all seriousness, King Groot is basically an updated version of the original “Groot, King of Planet X,” when he was an evil tree King trying to “branch out” his empire to Earth. We just shortened the name to “King Groot”.

Marvel.com: I have to give props to the team—King Groot looks incredible. What went into crafting this guy?

Gabriel Frizzera: When Marvel approached us to be part of the Monsters Unleashed event, I immediately called dibs on the original Groot, knowing we wanted to do a Guardians-related event featuring Angela. But when I looked at the original 1960s design again, I felt that it needed a bit of an upgrade to be the aggressive fighting boss we needed in the game. We didn’t want his bark to be worse than his bite.

So, inspired by the original [Jack] Kirby design, I bulked him up a bit, enlarged his “crown” and spikes. and added a mace hand. I also looked at the gnarly quality of tree barks and vines drawn by artists like Steve Bissette and John Totleben. Once approved, the design fell into the hands of our capable modeling team—which is getting pretty good at modeling alien trees. Since all our characters are carefully sculpted in Z-Brush, all the cool organic details can be created before they’re baked in the game model.

Marvel.com: If you had to guess, what would happen if King Groot ran into Groot and Rocket Raccoon in the Battlerealm?

Gabriel Frizzera: Hmm… I’ll go out on a limb and say they wouldn’t be friends. If you play our new event quest, “King Groot’s Loot,” you definitely find out more details, but what I can say is King Groot has been giving regular Groot a bad name in the Battlerealm, and Rocket isn’t happy.

Marvel.com: Ok let’s talk about how hard this guy hits! What is Unyielding Might? Is this ability as awesome as it sounds?

Gordon Thornton: King Groot’s Unyielding Might Signature Ability is definitely as awesome as it sounds! This Signature Ability gives King Groot amazing combat resilience by empowering him with regeneration while he’s waiting for his Fury Buffs to begin stacking again. This allows him to stay in the fight longer and focus on offense when he’s got Fury, and defense while he’s Regenerating, offering maximum face mashing time. Hello face, meet my new friend: Club Arm!

Marvel.com: From the looks of it, King Groot seems a little like a regenerating machine, able to bring himself back from the brink and avoid any status ailments along the way.

Gordon Thornton: King Groot has two regeneration abilities he can rely on. One will happen automatically when he switches from his Offensive to his Defensive State; the other is on command, a rarity for Regeneration abilities, when he performs his Level 3 Special Attack. It’s also possible to stack one on top of the other, to really get yourself back in the fight.

Marvel.com: In your opinions, what’s the coolest thing about King Groot?

Gordon Thornton: I think my favorite thing about King Groot is that when in his Offensive State he can instantly remove Debuffs at the cost of one of his Furies. Not only does this make King Groot very hard to shutdown with a Heal Block, it gets him out of fight ending Stuns, and has the added benefit of pushing him into his Regeneration State sooner as his Fury Buffs are removed.

Marvel.com: Anything else we need to know about the hulking brute?

Gordon Thornton: We all expect King Groot to be a strong defender with his tree-like resilience due to Regeneration and Debuff removals; Parry what Parry? Additionally, he has very high Base HP, which helps boost the strength of his Regeneration Buffs. Be sure to check him out when he comes to The Contest on April 27!

Star-Lord and company pitch in against a cosmic threat!

As Nick Fury donned the Infinity Gauntlet in the most recent “Marvel Avengers Academy” event, the major players throughout the galaxy felt its power. With the Gauntlet’s location revealed, many will inevitably try to take it for themselves.

The first of those comes in Ayesha, bringing her Priestesses to the Academy to make a bid for the Gauntlet. The Guardians of the Galaxy being particularly familiar with cosmic threats like Ayesha will lead the charge against her while new faces from their previous galactic adventures will come to lend a hand.

We grabbed a few minutes from Lead Narrative Designer Allen Warner’s busy schedule to get the lowdown on everything we’ll see in this new event.

Marvel.com: Ayesha and her Priestesses are adding a new burst of intergalactic flair to Avengers Academy. What brings them to Earth?

Allen Warner: During our “Legends Assemble!” event, it was revealed that Nick Fury was in possession of an Infinity Gauntlet.  Using the Gauntlet drew the attention of beings from across the cosmos who’ve come into contact with it before, and they all rocket toward Avengers Academy to claim it for themselves. Ayesha and her Priestesses of the Sovereign arrive like a crew of golden, cold-blooded, intergalactic mean girls to cast judgment on the Avengers, remake Earth to fit their “perfect” standards, and get their hands on the Gauntlet.

Marvel.com: What threats aside from Ayesha and her crew will the Avengers Academy students face?

Allen Warner: Ayesha and the Priestesses have used their awesome powers and catty insults to bend powerful cosmic beings to their will, including Abelisk and Tiamut the Dreaming Celestial. These behemoths will protect the Priestesses and attack the campus while Ayesha searches for the Gauntlet. The Collector is also here to do battle, but he’s more concerned with adding an Infinity Gauntlet to his collection than going along with Ayesha’s plans.

We’re also introducing a new battle map feature that adds an element of choice and strategy to combat, allowing players to travel to different destinations around the universe to do battle with cosmic characters like the Chitauri.

Marvel.com: This event ties in heavily with the previous Guardians event; will new players miss out if they don’t have the previously released heroes?

Allen Warner: No, everyone will have a chance to get all of the Guardians characters from the first event, including Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, Nebula, and Yondu.

Marvel.com: What will players who do already have the previous Guardians be able to do in that first week?

Allen Warner: Nova will be available for the first time in week one of the event. I’m really excited to get him into the game because I’ve always been a fan of the Nova Corps, he’s one of the last remaining Champions members from the current comic team to enter our game, and he adds a lot of cool powers and personality to the cosmic mix.

Players will also be able to get an awesome Thor Groot outfit in week one. This is a riff off of the Thor Groot from [THORS during Secret Wars], but our amazing art team took the idea to the next level, and it’s really fun to see how Loki and Thor and some of the other Asgardians react to him having Thor’s outfit and powers.

We’ll also be releasing all of the buildings and some decos from the original event, along with items to upgrade the Guardians from the first event, and to help in the coming weeks.

Marvel.com: Beyond the returning Guardians, what new faces will be joining the Academy throughout this event?

Allen Warner: Nova, Mantis, Collector, Cosmo the Spacedog, Adam Warlock, and Lil’ Groot.  I think it’s an awesome mix of Guardian-centric cosmic characters, and they all turned out looking incredible.

Cosmo is a personal favorite of mind, as anyone who plays the game probably knows, and while he’s been around as a decoration before, he will now be a fully playable character with unique animations, his own storyline, voiceover lines, visual upgrade levels, and more. He’s only the second animal recruit we’ve ever had in the game, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him cross paths with Lucky.

Mantis turned out amazing, and her visual levels are some of my favorite designs in the game. Adam Warlock’s are great too, as we reimagined him as a sort of golden, cosmic rock-god. Lil’ Groot is as adorable as you’d expect, and The Collector might be the best of them all. I really can’t wait for everyone to see what our art and animation teams created for these characters.

That’s not even mentioning the awesome outfits for Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Drax, Falcon, Enchantress, Iron Man, and Captain America. They’re all great, but the Captain America is my personal favorite. I don’t want to spoil it yet, but I’ll just say that you’ve never seen Cap like this before.

Marvel.com: How will Ayesha shape her event district? What new structures will players add to their campus?

Allen Warner: The event district is Ayesha’s palace inspired by the film [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2″], flanked by the giant golden Celestial, and the Collector’s hovering spaceship. The event building this time around will be the Collector’s Museum filled with incredible creatures, characters, and objects from across the galaxy. It’s one of the coolest and most intricate buildings we’ve ever made, filled with Easter eggs for future content, and events from the past.

Marvel.com: What’s next on the horizon for Avengers Academy?

Allen Warner: Thanos is closer than anyone thought, so it’s time for the Avengers to pursue every option possible to find their new recruits.

Peter Quill gets two new variations in to rock your world with!

Are you pumped for “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” dropping in theaters just two short weeks from now? Well D3 Go! wants to prep you for all the awesome cosmic madness coming up by introducing “Marvel Puzzle Quest” players to new 3 and 5-Star Peter Quill variations!

We talked to Senior Producer Josh Austin about Peter’s new upgrades and what they bring to the board.

Marvel.com: Let’s talk Star-Lord! We have 3 and 5-Star versions of the dashing cosmic outlaw blasting into “Marvel Puzzle Quest” to coincide with his return to the silver screen in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” on May 5. Are these versions more closely tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Peter Quill?

Josh Austin: With the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie coming out, we decided to focus more on the MCU version of Peter Quill, Star-Lord (Awesome Mix Volume 2) for the 5-Star; [the] 3-Star Star-Lord (Peter Quill) sports a look [artist] Kris Anka gave him for the [recent STAR-LORD] comic.

Marvel.com: And what about this Star-Lord makes him different from his 4-Star variant? What did the team choose to focus on to make these variants feel unique?

Josh Austin: The new 5-Star and 3-Star Star-Lord variations are more heroic for one. Instead of trying to sucker punch and steal from the bad guys, now he heals and steals! He swoops in heroically, uses the Milano to unleash blasters on the battlefield, and while everyone’s distracted by the chaos he quietly pockets some loot.

Marvel.com: Let’s talk a little about his kit. What’s going on under his hood?

Josh Austin: Star-Lord’s first power is called Something Good. Star-Lord swoops in with a last-minute rescue, looking surprisingly heroic in the process of course! For 10 Yellow AP, Star-Lord converts tiles of the enemy’s strongest color to Green Charged tiles. If one of Star-Lord’s teammates has less than 50% health, Star-Lord burst heals the team. The difference between the 3-Star and 5-Star is the amount this power boost heals; the 3-Star heals less than the 5-Star.

The next power is called Something Bad and it costs eight Purple AP. As mentioned above, here’s where Peter pockets some loot. Star-Lord steals random enemy Strike, Attack, or Protect tiles and if there aren’t any, Peter steals random enemy AP instead. The difference between 3-Star and 5-Star is the amount of tiles/AP being stolen.

The third power for both versions of Star-Lord is called Bit of Both and costs 12 Green AP. Star-Lord cranks up the volume in the Milano to complement its blasters as they unleash devastation on the battlefield. It destroys three random columns of tiles, leaving any friendly tiles and deals damage to the enemy team. Destroyed tiles do not generate AP or deal damage. The difference between 3-Star and 5-Star versions is the amount of damage that is dealt to the enemy team.

Marvel.com: Sounds like he’s going to be an awesome Green AP battery and force teams to rethink when and how they put special tiles on the board. That being said, when does Star-Lord really shine?

Josh Austin: Star-Lord is great against players that create Attack, Protect and/or Strike tiles; these variations really focus on changing the state of the board to change the tide of battle.

Marvel.com: And I can’t think of a better character to pair him with than Thor (Goddess of Thunder). Green Charged tiles help pump up her Smite, they both can dish out team damage, maybe throw in Cyclops (Uncanny) to keep her Smite up and let loose with the occasional Full Blast…who are you thinking for teammates?

Josh Austin: Star-Lord (Peter Quill) and Star-Lord (Awesome Mix Volume 2) with The Hulk (Totally Awesome) as he creates green—or blue—charged tiles to complement Star-Lord’s Charged tile ability. Iron Fist (Danny Rand) with his ability to generate Green AP and fortify friendly tiles. Also Hawkeye (Hawkguy) is a good choice with his ability to create Strike tiles and remove them.

Marvel.com: When do we get to add Star-Lord to our rosters?

Josh Austin: Both versions of Star-Lord are going to be available on Thursday, April 27 and will be featured in the event Come and Get Me that debuts that day. Come and Get Me is a new Thanos boss event similar to Galactus and Ultron and the final progression rewards a token to a 5-Star cover store featuring Star-Lord (Awesome Mix Volume 2).

There is also a new three-part Guardians themed event starting on Sunday, April 30 that features Peter Quill that runs until May 5 and puts the Guardians hot on the trail of a powerful relic. Star-Lord’s Versus Tournament is called Hooked on a Feeling and starts on May 4.

Marvel.com: Anything else we need to know about? Any cool new characters coming down the pipeline?

Josh Austin: In such a short amount of time after Star-Lord launches we will be sharing more info about our new 4-Star Rocket and Groot (Awesome Mix Vol. 2) coming to the game that pairs awesomely with the fun of the “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” so yes we have tiny Groot! Rocket & Groot are part two of the Guardians themed event and our new 4-Star Gamora (Awesome Mix Vol.2) will be part three. The events are written by Marvel writer Alex Irvine and each part of the event ties with the launch of a new character starting with Star-Lord this week and concluding with Gamora later in May.

And before I forget I wanted to mention some cool things about the Come and Get Me event featuring Thanos, just to give players a taste of what they’ll be up against and can prepare accordingly. At the start of the battle in Come and Get Me, Thanos creates six Infinity gem Countdown tiles that do different things when they are matched, like heal the player’s team or disable the powers of the player’s team depending on the color of the gem. Thanos can also create Infinity Gauntlet Countdown tiles that can’t be matched and won’t fall; the player will have to destroy them via abilities or match four otherwise the player will receive massive damage if the Countdown ends. There’s more for players to discover but needless to say Thanos is truly a force to be reckoned with.

Marvel.com: And last but not least, has the team prepared any cool promotions for Marvel Insiders?

Josh Austin: Yes, fans should also join or check out Marvel Insider in the coming days for ways to rack up points doing “Marvel Puzzle Quest” related activities! Then, use all points to redeem an awesome in-game reward.

Pick up Star-Lord and take on Thanos here and stay tuned to Marvel.com for more “Marvel Puzzle Quest” news and interviews.

We talked to Gazillion Lead Designer Ben “TheArtofRawr” Gilbert about the closed beta, what that means, how you can pick it up, and everything in between!

Marvel.com: “Marvel Heroes Omega” is headed to closed beta! That’s a big step towards the game’s full release right?

Ben Gilbert: Yes! The “Marvel Heroes Omega” closed beta for PlayStation 4 begins this Friday, April 21. We’re very excited for Marvel fans to finally have the chance to try out “Marvel Heroes” on console. We’re very happy with our current roster of Heroes, which we’ll be expanding over time. This will be one of the few places where Marvel fans can look forward to playing as characters from some of the most beloved Marvel teams, including the Avengers, Defenders, Inhumans, X-Men, and Guardians of the Galaxy, just to name a few!

Marvel.com: Let’s say that I want to take a crack at the closed beta on PS4. What do I need to do to start beating up bad guys?

Ben Gilbert: Head to the PlayStation Store, either through the official website or your PlayStation 4 console. We’ll have a variety of Founder’s Packs for sale that will offer closed beta access in addition to a wide variety of heroes and packs of heroes.

Marvel.com: Is there a hard limit on the number of players that will be able to participate in the closed beta?

Ben Gilbert: We don’t have any hard limits set. Right now, we’re just really excited to launch our closed beta and hope as many people as possible get a chance to play it. We’ll be looking very closely at player feedback and behind-the-scenes data to make sure our final launch build is in the best shape possible.

Marvel.com: Will the team be testing anything when the game heads to PS4? I have heard rumblings of a couch co-op mode. Can you tell us more?

Ben Gilbert: Those rumblings are very accurate! We’re very excited to officially announce that two-player couch co-op will be a supported feature for “Marvel Heroes Omega” on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This has by far been the number one question and request from our community—and so we’re very excited to be able to confirm that couch co-op will be a supported feature.

Of course, you can still party up with other players in our many public Headquarters areas. But couch co-op really does offer a new way to enjoy “Marvel Heroes Omega.” We’ve had some great times playing couch co-op internally. Teaming up with a good friend, battling villains and henchmen as our favorite heroes, and collecting loot feels great. We hope players agree.

Marvel.com: And does the team have anything planned for those most marvelous of gamers, the Marvel Insiders?

Ben Gilbert: That we do! We’ve also set aside a limited quantity of closed beta keys for Marvel Insiders, some of Marvel’s most passionate and engaged fans. Insiders can redeem the key for 50,000 points in Marvel Insider starting on 4/28! Insiders should check out the Rewards page for more details.

Ben Gilbert: Although I can’t announce any specific dates yet, Xbox One players should expect news very soon about dates for the beginning of our Xbox One closed beta. Stay tuned and keep an eye out on our official “Marvel Heroes Omega” website, Twitter, and Facebook for more details!

Also, while we’re very excited to bring “Marvel Heroes Omega” to consoles, I don’t want our PC audience to think we’ve forgotten about them. Whether you play on PC, PS4, or Xbox, we’ve got plans in the works for exciting new content. Stay tuned!

The man who brings Drax to life forms his team and prepares for battle!

He’s big, green, knows his way around a knife, and stands as one of the toughest guys in the known universe—and now he’s drawing a line in the stardust for “Marvel Contest of Champions” players everywhere.

Dave Bautista, aka Drax the Destroyer in “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” challenges all comers to test their might against his team of cosmic combatants. We talked to Dave about what makes his crew so formidable, why it’s better than all the challenge teams that have come before it, and the reason you won’t be able to get past his boss fight.

Marvel.com: Dave are you sure you’re ready to take on millions of “Contest of Champions” players who have been training for years to bring down the biggest and baddest villains the Marvel Universe has ever seen?

Dave Bautista: The real question is, are they ready for me? I’m here to test the mettle of these Champions and I expect that many of them will be destroyed by my challenge.

Marvel.com: You couldn’t have picked a better team to face down such overwhelming odds. Tell us a little about why you got the Guardians of the Galaxy gang together for this challenge.

Dave Bautista: You’ve got to trust your friends; you’ve got to trust your family. When asked what team I wanted to use for the challenge, there was no question who it was going to be.

Marvel.com: I love that you made Drax the boss for this event. How does it feel seeing a character you played on screen make the move to “Contest of Champions” and duking it out with Marvel’s other heavy hitters?

Dave Bautista: Being part of the Marvel family is still very surreal but nothing makes me happier than seeing Drax in a mobile game. Fighting as Drax in “Contest of Champions” feels like the perfect fit for both me and the character.

Dave Bautista’s Champion Challenge in Marvel Contest of Champions

Marvel.com: Have you taken Drax for a spin in the game? What do you think of the Destroyer as a combatant in the Contest?

Dave Bautista: Drax is a beast in The Contest. His abilities and special attacks make him a fierce offensive opponent. With his Fury and Bleed abilities, he can take down even the biggest adversaries.

Marvel.com: Ok if you hadn’t gone with the full Guardians roster, are there any other heroes or villains you would have wanted on your team?

Dave Bautista: I like the Champions who can get into a knock-down-drag-out brawl like Wolverine, Beast, and Venom. And of course the other big green guy: Hulk!

Marvel.com: How do you think your team matches up against Chloe Bennet, Clark Gregg, and Ming-Na Wen’s squads?

Dave Bautista: I like where their hearts were but their teams didn’t have that one thing that brings them all together. With my team at my side, I think we can show the players what a real challenge looks like.

Marvel.com: Finally, what do you have to say to the players that will be gunning for you and your crew?

Dave Bautista: They won’t be able to get past my challenge…my reflexes are too fast. Prepare to be destroyed.

The Avenging Angel of Asgard descends upon Battlerealm!

Hark the Asgardian herald Angela appears to kick butt and take names this week in “Marvel Contest of Champions.” Wondering how Odin’s oldest daughter fights compared to the rest of the cast? We got a chance to talk to Kabam Art Director Gabriel Frizzera and Character Designer Simon Cameron about this damsel definitely not in distress and all the pain she’ll be bringing to Battlerealm.

Marvel.com: Has The Grandmaster moved on from mutants and graduated to gods, or is Angela gracing The Contest for some divine intervention?

Gabriel Frizzera: Angela is a perfect fit for The Contest. A consummate warrior with Asgardian might and Angelic moves, she’s entering the game to show how it’s done. She’s such a perfect character to have in “Contest” that we don’t even explain how she got in the Battlerealm. She was already there, waiting for her turn to bash heads. We might know more about the connection between the Elders and new Asgardian Champions later in the year, but for now let’s leave it a mystery.

Marvel.com: Holy gosh she looks great. Her armor and weapons and are all spot on! What went into helping Angela make the jump from comics to Battlerealm?

Gabriel Frizzera: Angela was originally created in the 90s, and I suspect [she] was influenced not only by fantasy literature and RPGs, but also a nascent video game culture. Or maybe they all converged in this over-the-top, almost impractical golden outfit, with weird weapons and backstory. Whatever the case is, she was in our plans for a long time, because it just makes sense for the game. Our character team lead Gene Campbell modelled this one himself, and she’s been in the game files for some time now. We were just waiting for the right time to release her. Turns out the fantasy-style quest loosely tied to the Guardians was the perfect outlet for her.

Marvel.com: I can see she’s rocking a sword and what looks like a double-bladed glaive, but the real question is can she use her ribbons in combat?

Gabriel Frizzera: Unfortunately not. We use it a lot for visual effect and flair, but we decided to concentrate on the other weapons. We have limitations of how many props we can use before memory starts becoming an issue in the slower devices, so we gotta pick and choose. But the good news is we are developing a better system for tentacle-like appendages, since we have plans for future characters that use them.

Marvel.com: Let’s talk about her Battle Focus ability. How exactly does that benefit her in combat?

Simon Cameron: Angela is heavily based around her Buffs, but that also leaves her very vulnerable to Nullify abilities. Her Battle Focus Signature Ability gives her some resistance to Nullify, and helps keep her in fighting form.

Marvel.com: And her other abilities—Fury, Armor Up, Precision, and Expertise—make it sound like she just wants to stay in her opponent’s face wailing away.

Simon Cameron: Pretty much! She gains Buffs based on how much Power she has, basically one Buff for each possible power state. She can create an additional copy of each of these Buffs by landing Critical Hits, and another stack by using the appropriate Special Attack. She’s definitely happiest when landing hits on her opponent, however, careful Power Bar management will be needed to keep her at max damage output.

Marvel.com: And her teammates fit well, getting bonuses from her Aesir brethren Thor and Loki, and her Guardians of the Galaxy crew. Nothing flashy here though. What can you tell us about the dev strategy behind those bonuses?

Simon Cameron: Angela’s Synergy Bonuses are more defensive with health and block bonuses. Both synergies work well with her Resilience Regeneration ability, keeping her in the fight for longer.

Marvel.com: And when can we get her into the fight?

Simon Cameron: Angela will be coming to The Contest this Thursday, [April 13]! Make sure to check for in-game messaging and arenas to see how you can get your hands on this mighty warrior!
