Sideshow Designer and Sculptor Walter O’Neal on how Matt Murdock's beliefs played into the design.

1sSideshow Collectibles has added to their sixth scale line of Marvel figures with a terrific new Daredevil figure, depicting Matt Murdock’s alter ego in an updated costume, while also retaining the elements that make the Man Without Fear who he is. spoke to Sideshow Designer and Sculptor Walter O’Neal about the Daredevil sixth scale figure, what felt most crucial to include in the design, the influences at work, and more. What is it about Daredevil as a character you really wanted to capture in this figure?

Walter O’Neal: Since Matt Murdock’s faith is very much at the heart of who he is, we wanted to try to incorporate some elements of his religion into the suit in very subtle ways. The collar of the suit has a square cut-out in the center to give the impression of an inverted priest’s collar.

Inspired by the block-style kneepads of the 90’s armored suit, we created a metallic block-shaped design element with an implied cross-shape that we repeated throughout the suit – the idea there being that we incorporate some of the wrought iron elements of church yards and cathedrals that we generally associate with Daredevil’s environment directly into his suit. Beneath his feet, another cross shape is formed by the negative space in the tread of his boots. Finally, there’s also a spade devil tail incorporated into the design of his billy club holster that helps further the heaven/hell dynamic. Daredevil’s had a few different costumes through the years in the comics (though he always retains the horns, of course!). You give him a new costume, but he’s still recognizably Daredevil. Was it always the intention to balance classic and new elements here?

Walter O’Neal: The target was to make a comic-style Daredevil clad in his classic red. Aside from the horns, the color red, the billy clubs, and the “DD” logo on his chest, Daredevil’s costume generally doesn’t have any other signature elements that scream “Daredevil”.

We pulled elements from the Armored Daredevil suit in the 90’s, designed by Scott McDaniels, to give us some rhyme and reason as to how and where to break up the suit to incorporate the various leathers and stretch fabrics and add an extra layer of visual interest. The basic chevron shapes at the shoulders, abdomen, and thighs are pulled from that armored suit as inspiration. There are elements of the classic red costume from the comics, while also some aspects that are reminiscent of DD’s TV show uniform. Was that a conscious decision?

Walter O’Neal: Well, yes and no… The gray piping on his suit is a nod to the TV show for sure. Several of us here at the office loved the makeshift black outfit that he wore in the beginning of the Netflix series (before he got his actual suit) which featured some subtle red piping. We thought it would be neat to reverse that idea and use dark piping over the red DD suit to help break it up. So that connection was intended.

We worked on the design for our Daredevil figure in between the first and second seasons of the “Marvel’s Daredevil” TV show, so we had seen the design of the suit in the first season, but not the second. So while trying to steer away from the black armored gloves and gauntlets of the first season suit, we game up with more MMA-styled gloves with thick padding and metal knuckles on the outside for protection, but much thinner material at the palms and fingertips as to not diminish his sense of touch. The design of the suit for the second season of the show reimagined his gloves to incorporate more red and less black, and we ultimately ended up with similar solutions there. There are parts of the uniform, like the kneepads and boots, that feel so believably functional and realistic. Did you have that in mind designing the figure?

Walter O’Neal: Yes. The need to design for functionality is a big part of working in sixth scale as opposed to statues or any other non-articulated format. These figures need to move and perform, and the various features of the costume need to stretch, bend, and compress to facilitate that.

We were trying to infuse a bit of a tactical feel overall into the suit. The combat boots and integrated knee and elbow pads help push that notion. Lastly, with the knee pads, I really liked the idea of Daredevil being able to dash under things grinding/sliding on his knees across the pavement while kicking up sparks. That was some of the thought process that got us there… Daredevil’s billy club and the different ways he can use it has always made it a distinct Super Hero weapon. What was your approach to that important facet of the character?

Walter O’Neal: The goal was to really capture the adaptable nature of his signature weapons from the comics. They take multiple forms for their multiple functions and we’ve included options for them to be displayed as the standard dual billy clubs, nunchucks, a combined billy club staff, and his walking cane with the curved handle (in the exclusive version). How did you decide where exactly to use those darker portions/piping on the uniform to break up the red? I especially love the billy club holster that you mentioned.

Walter O’Neal: Aside from the dark gray piping on his torso, we aimed to keep the gray as more of an accent color limiting its use to keep the suit predominantly red with only touches of gray here and there. That dark gray was kept mostly to the metal “striking surfaces” of the suit where Daredevil was expected to make contact with his opponents – his knuckles, knees, elbows, toes, heels and the tips of his billy clubs. We tried to be very judicious overall.

Whether crouching or hanging, these two new Spidey statues are spectacular to behold!

Section 9 has made many life-size Marvel statues before among their high-end collectibles, but the new release of the title character from Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is easily one of the the most notable releases yet.

For the statue, which is available now, the famous character is seen in a dynamic pose, crouched and ready for action in his Tony Stark-provided costume. On top of that, there’s also a second version on the way as well, depicting Spider-Man hanging upside down from his web in the classic manner Spidey fans are familiar with. The Spider-Man statues join other current Section 9 Marvel life-size statues, including versions of Captain America, Iron Man, and War Machine from “Captain America: Civil War,” the film that introduced Tom Holland as Spider-Man. spoke with Section 9 CEO Stephan Lokotsch to discuss the creation of the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” life-size statue and the unique design challenges it provided. Is it especially exciting to get to work on a life-size statue of Spider-Man, given just how beloved he is? This is one of the most popular and iconic comic book characters ever!

Stephan Lokotsch: Considering that Spider-Man was my favorite Super Hero during my childhood, I can’t help but feel somewhat nostalgic “reconnecting” with him throughout adulthood. So yes, he has been a very exciting statue to be involved with, especially with the new developments in character portrayal on screen. Both “Civil War” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” have portrayed the character in ways we simply hadn’t seen on screen before – but were all hoping for – as it feels to be the closest to what the character felt like in his comic-book iteration. The “Homecoming” costume has a lot of specific new details we’ve never seen on a Spider-Man suit before. Was it cool to get to recreate it all, knowing people would be able to examine it so closely?

Stephan Lokotsch: When it comes to high-end collectibles, I am of the “the more, the merrier” sentiment. So, the long and short of it is: yes, absolutely. That being said, there are, of course, certain limitations to that when you are dealing with a suit that, on screen, benefits from heavy post-production and visual effects, such as the U.I. (user interface) motion graphics, etc. So, while not all of the Tony Stark-created gizmos, as seen on film, can be incorporated, we felt very satisfied with what ultimately was accomplished here. Spider-Man is known for his unique poses. How much thought went into how the statue would be posed and how did you decide on the final version? And what he would be posing on, given the possibilities?

Stephan Lokotsch: When choosing a pose for a character who has been around for this long, you want to consider two things: a representation of the way he appears in the movie you’re basing the statue on, and, equally important, the iconography that has been established over decades in the realm of the underlying source material, i.e. the comic books. As you mentioned, highly unique poses are inherently connected to this character, so I think the goal is to find a fair balance between the two mediums and their respective visual presentations. Speaking of poses, you also have a second version of Spider-Man who is hanging upside down. This one really blew me away as far as seeing the character in such a classic Spider-Man stance – but I imagine it was also pretty tricky to bring to life?

Stephan Lokotsch: The hanging version certainly required a lot of back and forth regarding its engineering to ensure Spidey would hold in place just the right way and not tilt back, forth or sideways. Most statues come with their own set of challenges – be it their intricate texture patterns in the costume or the high level of likeness detail. This one was more challenging in the technical department. That said, it was worth it, as we finally have a Spidey in his potentially most iconic state and we’re quite proud of that. I feel like people will give the hanging version especially quite a double take. I imagine in general though it must be really fun to see the reaction people have when they see these statues for the first time?

Stephan Lokotsch: As you can imagine, everyone has their own personal favorite Super Hero and sometimes just the sheer size of a Hulk, or Hulkbuster or our upcoming 9 foot+ Thanos is stopping people in their tracks. But even the largest characters sometimes lose their prime spot in terms of audience attention – and subsequent “selfie time”, with characters so immensely adored by fans all over the world, such as Spider-Man, who is often credited as one of the most popular Marvel characters of all time. You’ve done several other Marvel statues before, but coming on the heels of the “Civil War” versions of Captain America, Iron Man, and War Machine, is it particularly gratifying to have this new Spider-Man statue, given he made his debut in that film?

Stephan Lokotsch: Given my aforementioned childhood for Spidey, it is indeed a gratifying “full-circle” experience, though I will add that seeing any of these characters put together in 3 dimensions and at life-size, no less, puts a smile on the entire team that is behind the making of these collectibles. The first time, I stood next to one of our Hulks, I thought “this is it; this is as big as it’s going to get”, only to have that dwarfed by a life-size Hulkbuster years later. And that is the beauty of doing all of this; today it’s Spidey, tomorrow it’s Black Panther and then we’re moving into the highly anticipated Infinity War. It just never ends, and while, yes, we all have our favorites, it is an ongoing thrill to stay involved in the making of this ever-growing line of collectibles.

Stars of Marvel Studios' Avengers: Infinity War team up for epic charity event

Stars of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War team up for epic charity event counting down to the launch of movie-related products on March 3

Hasbro and Funko to support by donating millions in cash and toys

The Walt Disney Company today announced Marvel: The Universe Unites, an epic charity campaign combining the super powers of the cast of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War to help support children’s charities. The week-long event will see stars of the movie team up for a series of hero acts and social media challenges to provide funds and raise awareness for charities that support children and families impacted by serious illness. The initiative will culminate the weekend of March 3 when and Disney stores in the U.S. will donate 10% of sales of all Marvel products made between March 3-4, 2018 (up to $50,000) to Make-A-Wish® to help grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

“This movie has one of the greatest ensemble casts of all time, and we are challenging them to use their collective might to benefit children’s charities,” said Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media. “We’re kicking off by inviting some of the world’s biggest stars to get creative on social media to support Starlight Children’s Foundation, a charity that works to bring joy and comfort to hospitalized children and their families.”

As part of Marvel Studios: Hero Acts, a charitable initiative launched in 2016, some members of the cast of Avengers: Infinity War will receive a special toy care package filled with new products celebrating their Marvel character to be donated to children’s hospitals.

Their mission? To take a creative picture or video to reveal the new toys to fans and post it to their Facebook, Instagram or Twitter channels using #HeroActs. When their collective posts hit a million likes, they will unlock a $250,000 US donation to Starlight Children’s Foundation® from Marvel.

“Being a Marvel Super Hero gives us a powerful platform to directly influence positive change. Giving back to kids is the most impactful role you can play,” comments Marvel Studios’ Black Panther star, Chadwick Boseman. “Marvel: The Universe Unites and #HeroActs is just a fun way to support a noble cause while entertaining kids and fans around the globe.”

Marvel partners are also supporting the cause with their own #HeroActs in support of children’s charities. As part of the week’s events, Hasbro will donate $1 million US worth of cash and products to Give Kids The World, an organization that fulfills the wishes of children with critical illnesses and their families by providing them with an unforgettable trip which includes a visit to their village in Central Florida and access to Walt Disney World Resort.
