Hope van Dyne is ready for action in the July 6 film!

When we last saw Hope van Dyne in Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man,” she was ready to take on the mantle of The Wasp, brand new costume and all. With Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and The Wasp”  in theaters July 6, we’ll finally get to see her in action alongside Scott Lang!

On a set visit for a small group of reporters last year, Evangeline Lilly revealed Hope’s internal struggles and how the hero copes with finally getting the heroic role she’s been waiting for her whole life.

Director Peyton Reed and The Wasp/Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) BTS on set.

When we begin “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” it’s been two years since we’ve seen our shrinking heroes and a lot has changed. As suspected at the end of “Ant-Man,” Hope van Dyne is more than ready to show the world her strength and potential. “Instead of seeing her evolved into a super hero, I think that the leap we take with the audience is we all believed by the end of “Ant-Man” she’s ready to be a super hero,” observed Lilly.

Since The Wasp has been ready to take on her heroic role her whole life, the necessity of an origin story wasn’t a factor. “We make that leap of faith of saying, you know, she’s kickass,” remarked Lilly on Hope’s present skillsets. “Let her just do that and be that, and then let’s explore some of the other emotional through-lines of her life and her story.”

No two heroes are the same. “Scott is just incredibly lovable, easygoing, and relaxed about things,” explained Lilly on how Hope and Scott take very different approaches to their heroism. “Even when it seems like things are as dire as they can be, you have this sense that he’s kind of okay inside. Hope is generally not okay inside. But what I think is exciting about playing The Wasp is there is this incredible satisfaction in Hope, something that she has been waiting for her whole life, which is essentially an affirmation from her father, has come. And it came in the form of this mantle. It came in the form of this suit.”

The aforementioned Wasp suit we saw at the end of “Ant-Man was key in Hope’s development. “Now that she’s wearing it and she’s exercising those muscles that she has wanted to exercise all her life, she’s in a really different place emotionally when we start the film,” said Lilly. “Hopefully you’ll be able to see that and feel that instantly.”

As with Scott Lang, Lilly realized that family was also key to building Hope’s confidence. “That’s wonderful to show that people do evolve and change, and that something as profound as your relationship with your father can have a effect on — and a reverberation in every aspect of your life,” shared Lilly.

Family ties can be as strong as ants!

When we last saw Scott Lang in Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man,” he was trying to go straight for the good of his daughter Cassie. Now three years later, Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and The Wasp” will allow us to find out if Scott stayed on that path for the good of his family.

On a set visit for a small group of reporters last year, “Ant-Man and The Wasp” actor Paul Rudd reassured us that Scott is still doing the best he can, “I am now trying to just be as good of a dad as I can be.” While that gives the fans hope, you never know when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe; there’s always a super villain out there who tends to bend things to their will.

Rudd’s portrayal of the former criminal who finds himself in the role of a super hero was just the type of hero that was attuned to him. “I like the idea of playing a super hero that is not innately heroic or super in any way, just you know, a regular person,” explained Rudd. “And I like the idea of not embracing the role because of all of the difficulties that come along with having to be so badass, and how it would affect your life and how would it affect your relationships, and certainly being a responsible parent.”

“To kind of wrestle with those questions—we did a little bit in the first one—but you know, it’s certainly now more pronounced,” continued Rudd. He believed Scott’s family drives the character’s choices, “There’s a lot at stake in his life and in his personal life. He cares about all the people involved but it’s trying to figure out kind of what to do and also who I am—what kind of person, what kind of parent, and what kind of hero.”

The Wasp/Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) and Ant-Man/Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) BTS on set.

Familial feelings tend to extend to partners. While the first movie centered around Scott finding himself, it was always Hope who led the way and taught him the ways of being a super hero. Now that The Wasp is able to step up to the plate, Rudd is excited about working as a team, “We have this new hero that we’ve already learned about in the first one and now we get to kind of play off of each other and you see a partnership developed which is great.”

Rudd’s own children have thoughts on their father’s super heroic role, “My daughter who is 7, all she does is draw pictures of Ant-Man. It’s the sweetest thing in the world so I have lots of pictures of Ant Man which she draws.” And what about Rudd’s son who was once leery of the character? “He thinks it’s pretty cool. I think he thought it was pretty cool back then too, but he just likes to push my buttons.”

Stars of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War visit children’s hospitals in NY and LA!

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Marvel Studios, Marvel Studios: Hero Acts is donating $1.25 million to provide transformative experiences to strengthen the lives of children impacted by serious illness. The grant will provide $800,000 to Make-A-Wish® to grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses around the world, and $450,000 to Starlight Children’s Foundation to help bring joy and comfort to children in hospitals.

Chris Evans and Tom Holland, stars of Marvel Studios’ blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War, celebrated the announcement with special screenings of the film at New York’s Kravis Children’s Hospital at Mount Sinai in The Child Life Zone and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

The grants to both Make-A-Wish and Starlight Children’s Foundation are a part of Disney’s Team of Heroes commitment to reimagine the patient and family experience in and out of children’s hospitals.

Over the past decade, Marvel Studios has been an integral part of The Walt Disney Company’s relationship with Make-A-Wish America and Make-A-Wish International, hosting wish kids on film sets and at events around the world. Nine Make-A-Wish kids attended the April 23rd world premiere of Avengers: Infinity War in Los Angeles. And in December 2017, Marvel Studios and Make-A-Wish joined forces to grant the biggest set-visit wish ever, with 21 kids visiting the Atlanta, Georgia, set of the 2019 untitled Avengers film.

Starlight Children’s Foundation will use the grant to produce more than 26,000 Starlight Gowns – the charity’s revolutionary new colorful and comfortable children’s hospital gowns – featuring artwork inspired by the suits of eight favorite Marvel Super Heroes. Marvel products and a custom Avengers-themed comic will also be added to the Disney hospital care packages that will be delivered to more than 440 children’s hospitals in the U.S. Additionally, earlier this year, Marvel Studios’ talent banded together for a social media challenge and raised $250,000 for Starlight as part of the Marvel Universe Unites campaign.

“We are proud to donate to Make-A-Wish and Starlight Children’s Foundation,” says Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios. “It is an honor to make a meaningful contribution to these two organizations that continually strive to enhance the lives of seriously ill children.”

“Wishes are an important part of a child’s medical care. They can have super power-like effects building the physical and emotional strength kids need to fight a critical illness,” says Jon Stettner, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish International.” David Williams, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America, adds, “Thanks to the support of Marvel Studios, more kids around the world will replace fear with confidence, sadness with joy, and anxiety with hope through the experience of a wish-come-true.”

“Every kid dreams of transforming into their favorite Marvel super hero – and a hospitalized child is no different,” says Chris Helfrich, CEO, Starlight Children’s Foundation. “Thanks to the generous support of Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Company, tens of thousands of children in hospitals across the country will now have the opportunity to be transformed into Spider-Man, Iron Man, Black Panther and other amazing super heroes with their very own Marvel Super Hero Starlight Gown.”

Strengthening the lives of children with serious illness is a focus area of The Walt Disney Company’s social responsibility efforts. Disney is dedicated to delivering comfort, inspiration and opportunity to children and families around the world. In March, Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced an innovative five-year plan to dedicate more than $100 million in cash and resources to reinvent the patient and family experience in children’s hospitals.
