A mix of traditional and futuristic elements shaped this special place in the Marvel Universe.

As crucial as the characters are to any Marvel Studios movie, the setting is a character in its own right. In Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther,” the setting of Wakanda defines the story and sets the tone for T’Challa’s narrative.

Last year, during Marvel.com’s visit to the set of the film, “Black Panther” producer Nate Moore and production designer Hannah Beachler discussed how they built the world of Wakanda and what influenced them to bring the impressive location to life in the Marvel Universe.

Wakanda is a futuristic country grounded in its past. Moore spoke about having the character live in a world built on different communities coming together, “What we were very afraid of was making Wakanda almost too Kirby-esque and by that I mean making it feel almost like they’re alien and not human. The truth is they’re human. They’re just 20 or 25 years ahead of us. Having a city built on Vibranium allows them to have all these advances and have wealth beyond our wildest imaginings and that’s a big part of the movie.”

The initial design of Wakanda started with the comics. Moore explains how the design was a combination of ideas, “I think there were definitely some inspiration points, especially design-wise that we got form both Chris [Priest] and Ta-Nehisi’s run. Brian Stelfreeze is an amazing artist and some of his version of Wakanda and even Wakanda technology was stuff that we borrowed pretty liberally from. But there’s also a lot of original Ryan Coogler and Hannah Beachler, who is our production designer – a lot of their ideas that are outside of publishing that we found interesting.”

For concept ideas, Beachler was looking to the future, specifically contemporary architects who had designed in Africa. Inspired by avant-garde architect Zaha Hadid—one of the most respected and celebrated architects in the world—she found her inspiration. “I started poking around and looking at really modern architects who have designed in Africa, all over Africa, east and west Africa. And someone who I really fell in love with was Zaha Hadid, who has passed away, but she is one of the foremost architects. Her architecture is very voluptuous and very flowing, very organic. And the more I started digging into Senegal and Nigeria and finding things, while not necessarily futuristic-looking, very modern in their sensibilities as far as the way they’re putting together their elements and the colors that they use, I was struck by that. I think in Kenya, Uganda—Johannesburg was another one—where no matter where you go, you really do see that they’re always keeping in mind the tradition.”

A closer look at the design elements of Wakanda and you’ll see a familiar pattern emerge, a circular pattern, “I did a lot of research into what the circular designs mean, as far as, you look at Stonehenge, you look at a lot of these old designs and they were actually based on the idea of bringing in plumbing, you know, not electric, but using water as a way to create sort of an electricity, if you will,” said Beachler. “Sort of the idea behind it was, there were always these circles and it has to do with vibration and sound, and a lot of the stuff that we’re doing is sonic and based on sound, and vibrations. Vibranium is about vibrations and soaking that vibration in.”

What separates Wakanda from other places in the Marvel Universe is the fact that while it’s the most technically-advanced civilization it has a strong history of culture as its foundation. As Moore explained, “So imagine a place that still has standing monuments that are centuries old, next to the most modern skyscrapers in the world. In the same way, they haven’t lost a lot of their cultural touchstones that other places have. They still worship, potentially the same gods they did when they first started. They still have rituals that are centuries old because they never had that sort of cultural imperialism that you’ve seen across the world. So it’s a place that really sits between being technologically advanced but also having a high value on their traditions.”

Finding the value in traditional architecture but shaping it with a futuristic slant was the running vein for creating the world of “Black Panther.” “It was important for us to keep that tradition, because we wanted to honor and have reverence for the continent,” said Beachler, “and bring it to the screen in a way that you haven’t seen before, as being a prosperous place.”

Stars of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War visit children’s hospitals in NY and LA!

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of Marvel Studios, Marvel Studios: Hero Acts is donating $1.25 million to provide transformative experiences to strengthen the lives of children impacted by serious illness. The grant will provide $800,000 to Make-A-Wish® to grant life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses around the world, and $450,000 to Starlight Children’s Foundation to help bring joy and comfort to children in hospitals.

Chris Evans and Tom Holland, stars of Marvel Studios’ blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War, celebrated the announcement with special screenings of the film at New York’s Kravis Children’s Hospital at Mount Sinai in The Child Life Zone and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

The grants to both Make-A-Wish and Starlight Children’s Foundation are a part of Disney’s Team of Heroes commitment to reimagine the patient and family experience in and out of children’s hospitals.

Over the past decade, Marvel Studios has been an integral part of The Walt Disney Company’s relationship with Make-A-Wish America and Make-A-Wish International, hosting wish kids on film sets and at events around the world. Nine Make-A-Wish kids attended the April 23rd world premiere of Avengers: Infinity War in Los Angeles. And in December 2017, Marvel Studios and Make-A-Wish joined forces to grant the biggest set-visit wish ever, with 21 kids visiting the Atlanta, Georgia, set of the 2019 untitled Avengers film.

Starlight Children’s Foundation will use the grant to produce more than 26,000 Starlight Gowns – the charity’s revolutionary new colorful and comfortable children’s hospital gowns – featuring artwork inspired by the suits of eight favorite Marvel Super Heroes. Marvel products and a custom Avengers-themed comic will also be added to the Disney hospital care packages that will be delivered to more than 440 children’s hospitals in the U.S. Additionally, earlier this year, Marvel Studios’ talent banded together for a social media challenge and raised $250,000 for Starlight as part of the Marvel Universe Unites campaign.

“We are proud to donate to Make-A-Wish and Starlight Children’s Foundation,” says Kevin Feige, President, Marvel Studios. “It is an honor to make a meaningful contribution to these two organizations that continually strive to enhance the lives of seriously ill children.”

“Wishes are an important part of a child’s medical care. They can have super power-like effects building the physical and emotional strength kids need to fight a critical illness,” says Jon Stettner, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish International.” David Williams, president and CEO of Make-A-Wish America, adds, “Thanks to the support of Marvel Studios, more kids around the world will replace fear with confidence, sadness with joy, and anxiety with hope through the experience of a wish-come-true.”

“Every kid dreams of transforming into their favorite Marvel super hero – and a hospitalized child is no different,” says Chris Helfrich, CEO, Starlight Children’s Foundation. “Thanks to the generous support of Marvel Studios and The Walt Disney Company, tens of thousands of children in hospitals across the country will now have the opportunity to be transformed into Spider-Man, Iron Man, Black Panther and other amazing super heroes with their very own Marvel Super Hero Starlight Gown.”

Strengthening the lives of children with serious illness is a focus area of The Walt Disney Company’s social responsibility efforts. Disney is dedicated to delivering comfort, inspiration and opportunity to children and families around the world. In March, Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced an innovative five-year plan to dedicate more than $100 million in cash and resources to reinvent the patient and family experience in children’s hospitals.

The deadliest woman in the galaxy celebrated with friends and family!

The deadliest woman in the galaxy has been immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday! On behalf of the Marvel family, congratulations Zoe Saldana!

“Zoe pretty much owns outer space. I may be king of the world, but she is queen of the universe. Her iconic characters – Uhura, Neytiri, Gamroa – are role models for young women. These are women of courage and integrity, women who are unbound and authentic, women who stand for something,” shared director James Cameron, at the ceremony.

“Having a dream is just step one. Step two: sleeves up, hard work, persistence, passion, perseverance. Fail often and fail forward. If at first you don’t succeed, you dust yourself off and you try again,” explained Saldana. “I learned to love what I do and do what I love and that has been my mantra. From Burger King commercials, to Law and Order episodic, to a ballet movie. I got to be a pirate, an INS officer, a xenolinguist on the Enterprise. I got to be an alien warrior – well, multiple alien warriors.”

Zoe Saldana, most known for her role as Gamora in Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy,” celebrated her nearly two-decade long career with friends and family in Hollywood, California. Take a look at the gallery above!

Saldana can currently be seen in Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Infinity War. Grab tickets to see Gamora, the rest of the Guardians, and the Avengers take on the Mad Titan Thanos here.
