Spidey teams with Deadpool and faces the second Super Hero Civil War!

For over 50 years, Spider-Man has been a sensational standout in the Marvel Universe and the web-slinger is now back on the silver screen once again in Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War”! In celebration of his memorable history, we present Spidey’s spectacular step-by-step story…

While Peter Parker showed a disgruntled Johnny Storm around the new home of Parker Industries—the Baxter Building—the Zodiac ramped up their evil plans in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #3. Spider-Man saved Aunt May from War Goblins in Africa in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #4, and later teamed with S.H.I.E.L.D. to take down the Zodiac in London in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #5, not realizing its leader, Scorpio, stood as a major stockholder in Parker’s company.

Spidey and Deadpool confronted a fake Dormammu together in SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL #1, but the Merc with a Mouth took a contract to kill Peter Parker, believing him to be evil in SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL #2. To complicate things, after a mission to Bolivia against the Cult of Entropy in SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL #3, Deadpool decided to kill Spidey first, then his “boss.”

A corrupted Cloak and Dagger’s new boss, Mister Negative, released a new drug onto the streets of Shanghai in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #6. After faking corruption by Negative in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #7, Parker began to search for an antidote to the drug, and in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #8 set a trap for his foe to defeat him and release Cloak and Dagger from his control. Meanwhile, the Zodiac had infiltrated Parker Industries with a mole.

Spidey and Nick Fury tracked Scorpio from orbit in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #9, but the wallcrawler wound up attacked by the villain upon returning to Earth. Scorpio threatened to ruin Parker Industries in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #10, but our hero managed to temporarily beat him by sending him one year into the future in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #11. On the sidelines, Otto Octavius’ consciousness took more control of Peter Parker’s robotic helpmate, the Living Brain.

Spidey double-dated with Deadpool in SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL #4, mixed it up with Mysterio in SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL #5, and suffered through the production of “Deadpool: The Movie” in SPIDER-MAN/DEADPOOL #6. The wallcrawler found his hands full, though, when he met a future-seeing Inhuman named Ulysses in CIVIL WAR II #1, and witnessed the death of Bruce Banner from an arrow shot by Hawkeye in CIVIL WAR II #3.

In CIVIL WAR II: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1, Spidey offered Ulysses a kind of internship at Parker Industries, but the young man predicted a former-crook-now-employee of the company would attack the hero soon. As if to fulfill Ulysses’ vision, Clayton Cole donned the armor of Clash in CIVIL WAR II: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #2 to fight the Robot Master in CIVIL WAR II: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #3, and ultimately turn to the dark side in CIVIL WAR II: AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #4 when Spidey asked him to step back from trying to be a hero.

The webslinger battled the Ghost with Iron Man in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #12, while a would-be-champion named Regent rose up and began to steal powers from super heroes in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #13, beginning with Miles Morales, the other Spider-Man. The rest of the Avengers fell into Regent’s clutches in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #14 until Mary Jane Watson suited up as the Iron Spider to help Spidey dethrone the bad guy once and for all in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #15.

T'Challa faces the challenges of both Secret Wars and the second Super Hero Civil War!

For more than 50 years, the Black Panther has stood at the forefront on the Marvel Universe. With T’Challa appearing on the big screen again this year in both Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther”and “Avengers: Infinity War,” take a look back at over five decades worth of comic book adventures for the King of Wakanda!

The Panther explained to all assembled in NEW AVENGERS #29 that the final incursion drew nearer and the Illuminati felt stymied to stop it. Just then, Hank Pym appeared and in NEW AVENGERS #30 related his tale of discovering a group of near-omnipotent beings called the Beyonders stood behind the incursions. Together with Black Bolt of the Inhumans, T’Challa confronted Namor in AVENGERS #41 and believed he and his villainous Cabal perished.

The Black Panther and the Illuminati began to construct a lifeboat in AVENGERS #42, a way to save individuals to rebuild after the final incursion. The Galactic Council arrived at Earth in AVENGERS #43, announcing their intention to destroy the planet and halt the incursion. T’Challa met with the President of the United States in AVENGERS #44 to tell him that the Earth would be gone in six hours.

Reed Richards and the Panther piloted the lifeboat with their assembled braintrust aboard in SECRET WARS #1, but when they headed toward the point of collision between universes, a breach occurred that tore the craft in two. The mask of Doctor Doom appeared for a moment before them, but in an explosion of light they lost consciousness.

T’Challa awoke from stasis in SECRET WARS #3 to hear his old friend Doctor Strange explain that he and others slumbered for eight years and that Doom now ruled the world as its god-king. In SECRET WARS #4, Strange took the Panther to a battle between Doom and the Cabal, but when things turned sour, the magician teleported everyone away to save them from the god-king’s wrath.

The Panther and his old rival Namor found themselves in a land called Egyptia in SECRET WARS #5, but in SECRET WARS #6 they traveled to another area of Doom’s world to uncover a cache of powerful artifacts—including an Infinity Gauntlet—hidden from Doom by Doctor Strange.

On Doctor Doom’s artificial Battleworld, The Black Panther organized the legions of the dead in SECRET WARS #7 to go with him to fight the god-king. They arrived together in the middle of the final battle between Doom and his opponents in SECRET WARS #8, and T’Challa used an Infinity Gauntlet to attempt to take the tyrant down. Having distracted the demigod, the Panther stood back while Reed Richards confronted Doom for the last time in SECRET WARS #9.

What is Marvel Unlimited?

On the newly recreated Prime Earth, T’Challa joined with a band of heroes in ULTIMATES #1 to address larger cosmic concerns, such as the threat of the world-devourer Galactus and out-of-control time travel. After aiding the world’s champions versus a celestial destructor in CIVIL WAR II #1, the Panther learned of a new Inhuman named Ulysses who possessed the power of future-visions, and the death of Tony Stark’s dearest friend James Rhodes.

The Ultimates tried to stand between the Inhumans and Iron Man in CIVIL WAR II #2 when Tony’s rage over Rhodey’s death brought him to blows with the royal family. T’Challa aided in the tracking of Stark after he kidnapped Ulysses, but when confronting Iron Man, the young Inhuman revealed a terrifying new vision of The Hulk killing all the super heroes. Hawkeye assassinated Bruce Banner shortly thereafter, and the Panther watched the archer’s trial from Ultimates headquarters in CIVIL WAR II #3.

Tony Stark threw himself into identifying the exact nature of Ulysses’ power in CIVIL WAR II #4, while The Black Panther worked with Captain Marvel in arresting a suspect from one of the Inhuman’s visions. Stark confronted the Ultimates and Marvel with his theories, but tempers soared when he and the captain angrily disagreed on the matter. Ultimately, T’Challa stood alongside Captain Marvel, the Inhumans, and the Guardians of the Galaxy in CIVIL WAR II #5 to battle Iron Man, the Avengers, and the X-Men.

Back in Wakanda, unrest among the populace grew in BLACK PANTHER #1, and an anarchist named Tetu fomented insurrection. Furthermore, two of T’Challa’s loyal guard betrayed him and flew off to start their own resistance movement.

The Black Panther traveled to Wakanda’s border with Niganda in BLACK PANTHER #2 to confront Tetu’s associate Zenzi. There, he battled against her power to influence men’s minds, and withdrew when she amplified his guilt over his lost sister Shuri. In BLACK PANTHER #3, T’Challa faced off against Tetu himself, but the rebel leader escaped the monarch’s wrath.

In BLACK PANTHER #4, the Panther’s council announced the troubles as revolution, and after he consulted his mother Ramonda on what to do, a terrorist bombing raid on the capital city nearly killed the woman. Angered, T’Challa called in help from former Avenger Manifold in BLACK PANTHER #5, as well as sought advice from a collection of wily members of the world’s various intelligence leaders. Tetu enlisted Zeke Stane to help him in BLACK PANTHER #6, and together with the Fenris Twins, the villain captured the Panther during a raid on Tetu’s base. In BLACK PANTHER #7, T’Challa’s friends the Crew rescued him and helped him break through his enemy’s troops.

War's hard on everyone, especially super-powered kids.

Each week, we use our super sleuth skills to dig into the histories of the characters fighting on both sides of Secret Empire!

Wars, whether overt or secret, take their toll on everyone involved. Soldiers fight the battles, their families try to go on living back home and children do their best to understand the whole thing.

SECRET EMPIRE may have ended last week with the true Steve Rogers returning thanks to the efforts of Bucky Barnes, Kobik and everyone else who resisted Hydra’s advances. But, just because Captain America’s back to normal, doesn’t mean the damage gets fixed in an instant, at least in some cases.

This week’s CHAMPIONS #12, by Mark Waid and Humberto Ramos, examined the current status of the team in the wake of their incredible and horrible experiences during the conflict, which we’ll examine now!

Champions (2016) #12

Champions (2016) #12

What is Marvel Unlimited?

This version of The Champions – Totally Awesome Hulk, Young Cyclops, Ms. Marvel, Viv Vision, Miles Morales Spider-Man and Nova – initially came together because they didn’t like how the adult heroes handled the business of saving the world.

Even though they had their differences, the Champions joined up with the rest of the adult heroes in the Underground after Captain America took over the country in the name of Hydra.

As Secret Empire kicked off, their ranks swelled to include Ironheart as well as the new versions of Wasp, Falcon and Patriot. When Black Widow split off from the rest of the resistance fighters, intent on taking Steve Rogers out for good, the Champions followed her.

Even though Miles Morales had seen the same vision of himself killing Captain America as everyone else in CIVIL WAR II, he and his team intended to let Black Widow train them in the Red Room – as seen in SECRET EMPIRE UPRISING #1 – but never fully agreed with the idea of killing Steve Rogers.

Secret Empire: Uprising (2017) #1

Secret Empire: Uprising (2017) #1

UPRISING also saw the Champions infiltrate the Hydra Youth Choir, a plan designed by Widow to get them close to Viper and eventually flip her to their side. This move allowed both Miles and Black Widow to get close enough to Steve Rogers to kill him, but instead Cap killed his former Avengers comrade and Miles gave himself up.

The remaining members of the team did their best to continue fighting against Hydra-Cap, but were temporarily erased from existence after he used a Cosmic Cube-created armor to rewrite history. As we mentioned above, though, Bucky’s plan to bring Kobik and Steve back worked and everyone returned to the land of the living, though still with the memories of what happened.

The Empire Strikes Back

In addition to bringing dead characters like Rick Jones and Black Widow back from the dead, Kobik also offered legacy characters like Miles, Amadeus, Sam Wilson, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Kate Burton, Jane Foster, Wolverine and Iron Heart a “journey of discovery…through the Vanishing Point.” Upon returning in the next panel, these individuals had been restored. To see exactly how, you’ll have to get the various GENERATIONS one-shots that feature these heroes meeting up with their predecessors in ways that allow long-dead or earlier versions of characters to interact with their modern counterparts.

The teen hero struggles with his role in potentially killing Captain America!

Each week, we use our super sleuth skills to dig into the histories of the characters fighting on both sides of Secret Empire!

Surviving Secret Wars and making his way into the 616 Universe may have seemed like the best possible thing for former Ultimate Universe denizen Miles Morales, but then Civil War II broke out and a bomb got dropped on him.

In CIVIL WAR II, Spider-Man witness one of Ulysses’ future-visions which saw him holding an impaled Captain America on the Capital steps in Washington, D.C. Ever since, he’s been understandably shaken.

Of course, everything notched up a level when Steve Rogers revealed his true colors veered more towards Hydra green than U.S.A. red, white and blue as Secret Empire kicked off.

The Champion fought bravely at the first battle of Washington, D.C., but soon fell back with his teammates and became part of the resistance. In SECRET EMPIRE #1, he and the other Champions helped save Rayshaun Lucas and get information from Rick Jones.

In the following issue, Black Widow split off from the others, knowing that Steve Rogers could not be saved and needed killing. As she made her exit, Miles stopped her and offered his services, feeling that he would be the one to kill Cap anyway. Initially she denied his offer of help until the other Champions showed up. Then she brought them all in and began giving them Red Room training.

Meanwhile, over in SECRET EMPIRE UPRISING #1, Morales and his teammates helped infiltrate the Hydra Youth Choir which allowed Black Widow to get Viper to join their side. As seen in SECRET EMPIRE #5, the group also helped acquire an old man in a hospital bed who, as we saw in SECRET EMPIRE #7, turned out to be Mosaic!

Before discovering that, though, Miles helped keep the Champions together in #6, convincing the Wasp to stay while also talking to Widow about their views on whether Steve Rogers remained save-able or not.

The actual targeting of Rogers came in SECRET EMPIRE #7 as Widow literally took aim at him while using Mosaic to take over the nearby Hydra troops and the Champions to fill their various roles. Though Black Widow tried holding Miles back from the action, he escaped and did wind up confronting Captain America on those famous steps.

Miles fought well, but that didn’t stop Cap from killing Black Widow in the process. In his rage, Miles achieved the upper hand and stood over Rogers’ body, not far from the piece of jutting rock his vision told him he should impale the former her upon. Instead of giving into to supposed destiny, though, Morales let the Star Spangled Avenger live, even though it meant getting captured by Hydra.

The Empire Strikes Back

The end of SECRET EMPIRE #7 found another legacy hero reclaiming his place amongst his fellow costumed crusaders. As Miles Morales got locked up, alongside his fellow Champions, Sam Wilson donned his Captain America costume, lifted his own shield and declared that this battle had not yet ended. As we remember from a previous installment, Sam had given up hope in the Captain America name after Steve Rogers showed his Hydra allegiance, but now seems to be taking the name back and re-dedicating himself to acting as a symbol for justice and hope in one of the darkest times in the Marvel Universe!

Tracking the major alterations the mega event has made to the Marvel Universe!

You didn’t need to be Ulysses to see that Civil War II would change the face of the Marvel Universe. And with only a matter of weeks before the final issue of CIVIL WAR II sees the light of day on December 28, we look back on some of the most shocking game-changers from the first seven issues of the series.

It’s War (Again)!
Last December, Marvel announced a second super hero civil war 10 years after the first one, which rocked the Marvel Universe for years to follow. It only makes sense then that this moment provides us with our first game-changer. As [series editor] Tom Breevort said at the time “neither [side] being painted as absolutely right or absolutely wrong” might force readers out of their traditional camps to consider other viewpoints.

If we know anything from the initial Civil War, scars ran deep and no doubt, the heroes and fans alike will feel after effects from this family feud for years to come.

War Machine: Out of Order
When the Avengers set an ambush to bring in Thanos, thanks to the use of Ulysses’ precognitive powers, few expected the cost to include War Machine’s death. This event lit the fire that became Civil War II with Tony Stark seeking to prevent similar tragedies from occurring while Carol Danvers still believed in restricting criminals, such as Thanos, of their freedom to act.

Hulk DOWN!
With War Machine dead and She-Hulk in critical condition, the Avengers soon faced yet another staggering loss with the death of one of its founding members: The Incredible Hulk. Recognizing his capacity for destruction, Bruce Banner created a failsafe to prevent further Hulk-fueled havoc that would result in his death. Only fans had no idea just what that “failsafe” would look like…

BULLSEYE! Give the Man 20 Years to Life!
Few would accuse Hawkeye of fitting the same super hero mold as Captain America or Spider-Man, but as Bruce Banner understood, sometimes being heroic means doing the things no one else will do. Given how often Clint Barton received the call for those kinds of missions on behalf of S.H.I.E.L.D., it should have come as no surprise when readers discovered him as Banner’s failsafe, as he killed his longtime friend and fellow Avenger to halt another Hulk incident.

Civil War II #8 cover by Marko Djurdjevic

Civil War II #8 cover by Marko Djurdjevic

Tony Stark Goes Black Ops
Although many readers no doubt questioned Carol Danvers’ use of precognitive policing, Tony Stark crossed a line of his own when he not only kidnapped Ulysses from the Inhumans’ compound but also tortured the young man and conducted non-consensual tests on him. Although Tony used this information to discover Ulysses’ powers were fallible and based only on probability, it failed to convince Captain Marvel to stand down. Further, it failed to convince many readers of Tony’s moral high ground.

Let’s Get Ready to Ruuummmbbbllleee!!!
By the fourth and fifth issues of CIVIL WAR II, the super hero fight began, and for fans of fantasy battles, the major teams found themselves duking it out for all to see. Of course, some heroes seemed to take some real pleasure in finally getting to lay the smack down on each other. Once the dust settles from this drawn-out slobber knocker, however, the question remains of how—or if—they will ever stand side-by-side again?

Did Carol Just Do What We Think She Did …
At the end of CIVIL WAR II #7, we see Iron Man confronting Captain Marvel on the steps of the Capitol in a suit that looks like a super-sized version of War Machine’s armor. This time, Carol plays the role of Thanos as she delivers a shot so powerful that, once again, we see another War Machine fall…

Get the big finish in CIVIL WAR II #8, available December 28 from Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez!

Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez are extending the series with Civil War II #8!

It’s the story that has the world on the edge of its seat as heroes stand on opposite sides and fight to preserve the security of the future. And if you thought it couldn’t get bigger, you thought wrong! Today, Marvel is pleased to announce the expansion of the blockbuster Civil War II event with CIVIL WAR II #8, coming to comic shops later this year!

Legendary creators Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez will extend their stay in the trenches of battle for one more unforgettable issue. Cracks are starting to immerge in the predictive visions of the new Inhuman, Ulysses, and the foundation where our heroes once stood is starting to fracture.

“First of all, the response from fans over Civil War II has been so heartwarming,” says Bendis. “Secondly, over the summer I thought of a different, hopefully better, way to tell our ending.  It’s not a different ending but a different way to tell it and I am so happy that Marvel gave us this chance to do our thing. Some fans already know that a lot is going to change in the Marvel Universe post-Civil War II but we’ve kept some secrets secret and issue #8 is chock full of them.”

Will the heroes of the Marvel Universe wield the power of “predictive justice” to change the future or battle to protect tomorrow? The additional issue of CIVIL WAR II will bring the explosive event to its powerful conclusion, but with an Inhuman at the center of the conflict with the ability to see what’s to come, has the future already been foretold or can it be changed?

“As the events of Civil War II continued to unfold across the Marvel Universe we saw that the stakes kept rising,” says David Gabriel, Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing. “By providing retailers and fans an additional issue, Bendis and Marquez are given the added freedom to present a story that is going to bring the war to a cataclysmic ending with seismic changes to the Marvel Universe.”

Ideologies have been challenged, alliances have been tested, and battle lines have been drawn. What will be the end result as the final vision from Ulysses is revealed to the heroes of the Marvel Universe and which side will stand triumphant over the other? Join Marvel this fall as Iron Man and Captain Marvel gather their sides and come head-to-head for the epic confrontation in CIVIL WAR II #8!
