For the ninth year, Marvel’s own cosplay expert Judy Stephens returned to Dragon Con in Atlanta, GA to cover the incredible Marvel Cosplay on show throughout the convention.

Dragon Con, which draws fans from all over the world, saw a record number of attendees—over 80,000!—visit over Labor Day weekend. And there were hundreds, if not thousands, of cosplayers showing off their love for Marvel in photo ops, during panels, and on the convention floor.

Marvel cosplayers gathered to show off their creativity and talent during the Marvel Universe Photoshoot, organized by the Super Hero Costuming Forum, on Sunday, September 3. More than 400 cosplayers attended, representing characters like Captain Marvel, Spider Gwen, Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Wolverine, and more!

Check out this gallery to see some of the amazing costumes captured by Judy Stephens and photographer Nicole Ciaramella.

We spoke with seasoned cosplay variant cover model and Marvel.com Producer Judy Stephens to learn more about her experience as the Captain Marvel variant cover star, whether or not she will be participating again this year, why she chose to portray Carol Danvers, and more, below!

Marvel.com: Last year, you were featured on one of the cosplay variant covers as Captain Marvel. What was that experience like?

Judy Stephens: The cosplay covers experience has been amazing as a fellow cosplayer and photographer. Being able to give cosplayers the experience to be featured on a cover was a tremendous, joyful experience. The best part was my father buying his first comic and telling the comic store owner, “That’s my daughter!”

Marvel.com: Will you be gracing the cover of a cosplay variant again this year?

Judy Stephens: This year we’re featuring a new range of characters and cosplayers, so no new Captain Marvel cover this year. Time for 15 more cosplayers to get their change to be on a cover, including Black Panther, Gwenpool, Hellcat, and more!

Marvel.com: From start to finish, how long did it take you to create your Captain Marvel costume?

Judy Stephens: Making the Captain Marvel costume was the first time I made a full spandex bodysuit, so there was some trial and error. But with the bodysuit, hand-made gloves, boot covers, and sash, it was about 35 hours of work.

Marvel.com: We saw that you have been working on an updated version of your Captain Marvel costume. What did you learn from making your last one and how did you apply that to this year’s costume?

Judy Stephens: Sewing spandex can be tricky, so this new costume was all about the things I learned from working with spandex, including fitting to my body. One thing I certainly learned was how to pattern and map out all the pieces of the suit, which for this new version has 52 pieces. Sewing a body suit like Captain Marvel is all about patience, pinning and matching lines and then constantly checking the seams as you sew. As long as you don’t rush through each step of the process, you end up with a successful spandex bodysuit! And for the new costume, I’m making the gloves, boot covers and utility belt all out of leather.

Marvel.com: Why Captain Marvel?

Judy Stephens: Carol as Captain Marvel represents a movement. With her new title, her previous costume became a new fully functional uniform. But it’s not only her new outfit, but what the title meant for Carol. To stand strong, to represent who she was and how she’s overcome her struggles in the past. Carol has become a true leader not only for our female readership, but all our fans.
