The Hunter is here to play the game!

From the wilds of Africa to the concrete jungle of New York City, Kraven will go to any lengths to get his ultimate trophy. Now Kraven stalks through “Marvel Puzzle Quest,” keen hunter’s mind and devious traps at the ready, prepared to take down any foe. We talked to D3 Go! Senior Producer Josh Austin about Sergei Kravinoff’s introduction and what makes him unique amongst the game’s ever-growing roster.

Marvel.com: Kraven is gonna have a great time hunting spiders in “Marvel Puzzle Quest” – he has so many options! What does Kraven bring to the “MPQ” table that he just needed to be in the game?

Josh Austin: Players like a bit of variety and often request Super Villains in “Puzzle Quest” so this was our chance to bring a new baddy into the game! Kraven the Hunter (Sergie Kravinoff) is a 4-Star character that was designed to utilize what makes him a unique foe for not only Spider-Man but also Squirrel Girl!

Marvel.com: First and foremost Sergei Kravinoff is a big game hunter, but his definition of big game could mean super heroes or lions depending on the day. How did the team integrate his hunter roots into his playstyle?

Josh Austin: The team really tried to focus on his most memorable traits, including rage when his ego takes a hit, studying his prey’s strengths to use against them, and his ingenious use of traps to bring his targets down.

Marvel.com: Ok give us the skinny on all his abilities? How will Kraven be taking it to his opponents?

Josh Austin: Kraven’s first ability is called Wounded Pride and costs 10 Black AP. For this ability, Kraven creates a Black Countdown tile that destroys AP in the enemy and ally teams’ strongest colors and deals damage for each point of AP destroyed.

Kraven’s second ability, Think like the Enemy, is a Purple Passive. At the beginning of the turn, if there are at least three enemy special tiles on the board, Kraven reduces their strength and deals damage.

The consummate hunter’s last ability, Most Dangerous game, costs 10 Blue AP. Kraven places trap tiles on the board that steal AP of a random color from the enemy team each turn. If the tile is matched away, a few basic tiles will convert to the team’s strongest color and Kraven will deal damage to a targeted enemy.

Marvel.com: It seems like Kraven’s main strength is in strategically destroying the enemy’s AP, while also making enemy matches really unfavorable, is that fair to say?

Josh Austin: Right! Kraven was designed to stalk, weaken, and destroy the enemy by slowly building up ways to remove their AP and dealing damage in the process.

Marvel.com: I’m already thinking about teaming him up with Peggy Carter and using Legendary Presence, in combination with Kraven’s Most Dangerous Game to make it super difficult for the opponent to use any powers. Who does he work well with?

Josh Austin: Peggy’s a great teammate to have at his side! Kraven also works great with characters that create enemy Special tiles, say Carnage for example, because Kraven will reduce their strength and deal damage to the enemy.

Marvel.com: And is there a specific cover build you have been using?

Josh Austin: For me I’m a fan of 3/5/5 to have less in the power that destroys my AP, it’s pretty tough if you have enough AP in it and can add the both teams AP destroyed to the attack. I like the idea of using someone that creates enemy tiles and utilizing them against the enemy, especially if they are creating strike tiles as well.

Marvel.com: When do we get to take Kraven on the hunt?

Josh Austin: Kraven is available starting on Thursday, January 11 and will be playable/earnable in the S.H.I.E.L.D. Training event that starts that same day, which rewards tokens to Hearts of Darkness that has a Kraven cover and more.

Kraven’s debut event is Hearts of Darkness that also starts on January 11 and he will be available as placement rewards. The Kraven & Friends Vault opens January 14 and features Kraven along with many different rewards in an 80 item Vault. Special Kraven Damage Power Ups can be earned in Hearts of Darkness, S.H.I.E.L.D. Training, and a Webbed Wonder event. The Webbed Wonder event starts on January 15 with Kraven as a progression reward along with token rewards for the Kraven & Friends Vault. Finally, Kraven’s featured tournament is called Constant Kraven which starts on January 14 and he will be a progression reward and will also reward tokens for the Kraven & Friends Vault.

As Kraven the Hunter sets his sites on Captain America, we paint a target on his first appearance!

Every Friday we use the powers of Marvel Unlimited to look back at the very first appearance of a major character, place or object that made waves this week.

Mark Waid and Chris Samnee are not taking it easy on Steve Rogers. As the Home of the Brave story launched its third part in CAPTAIN AMERICA #697, the shield-slinger found himself in the crosshairs of the most dangerous hunter in the Marvel Universe, Sergei Kravinoff.

He debuted way back in 1964’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #15 simply as Kraven, the Hunter on that issue’s cover. The story itself, by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, began with Spider-Man rousting a bunch of mobsters. One of them escaped his flytrap and turned out to be none other than the Chameleon!

To keep Spidey out of his business, Chameleon contacted his old friend — and eventually revealed as his second cousin — Kraven the Hunter! A known celebrity, his presence in New York City caused enough of a stir that J. Jonah Jameson covered the story himself and asked for Peter Parker to shoot the event.

After showing his prowess with animals by subduing escaped snakes and gorillas, Kraven flat-out told JJJ that he arrived in the Big Apple for one purpose: to hunt Spider-Man.

From there, the Hunter secretly met up with the Chameleon. While there, he explained how he’d gotten his advanced powers: “I possess undreamed-of strength and speed, which I obtained by drinking a secret potion, stolen from the witch-doctor of a hidden African tribe!”

Kraven shifted from reading about Spider-Man to watching him in the act as he took on a group of thugs hired for this exact purpose by Chameleon. Immediately after, the two came to their first round of blows with the Hunter displaying a far superior fighting style. Kraven won the fight by using a potion on the wall-crawler and then letting him escape to enhance this game of cat and mouse.

The next day, Peter felt better but still had the shakes from Kraven’s poison. Later on, Spidey put a tracer on his new enemy, but wound up following him right into Central Park. Or so he thought!

He actually tracked Chameleon dressed as Kraven while the real Hunter skulked behind them. The wall-crawler got snared in a net trap, but used his strength to break free. He had more trouble with the wrist and leg cuffs that developed a powerful magnetic attraction to each other. Even shackled like that, Spidey managed to knock Chameleon out, dodge a variety of other attacks, and ultimately, entrap Sergei in a huge web. At the end of the issue, our hero watched as the two villains got on a boat for deportation setting the seeds for his newfound hatred of the super human community.

FLASH FORWARD

Kraven’s most well-known for going up against our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but this attempt on Captain America’s life is not the first time he’s branched out. Heck, it’s not even the only time he’s appeared in the same issue as Cap! In fact, in his second appearance ever — TALES OF SUSPENSE #58 — Kraven teamed up with Chameleon again and stumbled right into Iron Man who took the Hunter out. Kraven didn’t partake in the title battle between Iron Man and Captain America, though. Instead Chameleon played with Iron Man’s mind so that he would attack the Sentinel of Liberty while under the impression that the identity-stealing villain had taken over the real Cap’s body.

With the Guardians stranded on Earth, Rocket has a Hunter on his tail

In a universe full of monsters, talking animals, and spider people, only one villain stands bold enough to hunt them all down and showcase their hides like a badge of honor. On February 22, Kraven the Hunter stalks his latest prey in ROCKET RACCOON #3, written by Matthew Rosenberg with art by Jorge Coelho.

To help get all you novice hunters out there ready we asked Rosenberg to pass on a little of Kraven’s wisdom. For your convenience we’ve taken the liberty of putting it all together in a very special how-to guide:

-“First things first, raccoons are crafty little beasts so make sure you have secured a bag or cage capable of holding them. This is important because there is no honor is capturing your prey if you cannot showcase it to lesser hunters.”

-“Remember to keep your plan simple; we are only dealing with a raccoon. Never underestimate your prey.”

-“Use your environment. On Earth, raccoons are considered disgusting and unwelcome animals. This disgust is only magnified when it is a freakish, genetically enhanced, alien raccoon, so follow the shrieks of commoners. If this does not work, try searching near garbage cans.”

-“Be prepared for anything. Remember that the hunter is the true weapon, and an honorable one bests his prey with only the bear minimum. If they are without a weapon, throw yours aside. However, in the case of an intelligent, weapons crazed vermin – always have a bigger gun.”

-“Always be willing to go further than your prey. If they steal an assault vehicle, steal a tank. If they take cover inside a secure facility, bring down the building. Persistence is key. A master hunter is not deterred by even the most daunting circumstances.”

-“Maintain the element of surprise and cut off all escape routes. Raccoons are quick and chasing them down is both annoying and tiring. Anticipate and remove all possible means of escape before launching your well devised sneak attack.”

And that’s it! You’re now prepared to head out on your first alien raccoon hunt and with Rocket stranded in New York now marks the opportune time to make your move. Though it may be well advised to wait and see how Kraven does chasing him across the city before you launch your full-scale attack. After all Rocket isn’t your ordinary prey.

T'Challa teams with Storm against Kraven and tries to keep Hell's Kitchen safe during Fear Itself!

Read through some of T’Challa’s most thrilling adventures on Marvel Unlimited to mark Black Panther’s 50th anniversary!

Writer David Liss brought BLACK PANTHER: THE MAN WITHOUT FEAR to a close alongside artists Jefte Paolo and Francesco Francavilla with a pair of powerful stories as T’Challa still tried to keep Hell’s Kitchen safe in Daredevil’s absence.

In the Paolo-drawn #519520, the Panther defended himself against the onslaught of Kraven the Hunter while trying to save the experimented-upon Brian, who worked at his diner. The wildly evil Dr. Sheri Holman called in a favor with Kraven to get her former subject back.

Hunter and prey battled one another all over the city until Kraven knocked the Panther away. Luckily for him, Storm broke her word to stay away and grabbed her husband before he plummeted. The couple teamed up to take on the villain who only ceased his hunt when he realized how awful Dr. Holman’s experiments turned out to be.

The last three issues, drawn by Francavilla, found Panther dealing with the events of Fear Itself, which saw the negative emotion taking over as the Norse god known as The Serpent returned. Along with many evil hammers crashing to Earth from space, so did the essence of the long-time Captain America adversary Hate-Monger.

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear (2010) #521

What is Marvel Unlimited?

The entity entered the body of an increasingly bitter and racist corporate drone named Josh Glenn who took quick advantage of the overall sense of dread and worry. Instead of entering the larger battle, T’Challa continued his guise as Mr. Okonkwo the diner owner to help anyone left in Hell’s Kitchen while also attempting to quell the violence in the streets. Before long, Hate-Monger actually entered the diner to make his presence known more fully. Far more surprising, though, the appearance of a new player on the scene: American Panther!

A long-time racist, the American Panther blamed an alleged illegal immigrant for breaking up his parents’ marriage and let that anger generalize to all non-white people leading him to become a violent cop and eventually Hate-Monger’s costumed compatriot and literal boot-licker.

As you can imagine, this didn’t sit well with T’Challa who enlisted Sofija to help him take on both evil-doers. Thanks to a carefully plotted plan they gained the high ground with a combination of technology and superior fighting skill. The police walked away with both criminals, leaving the one true Panther to wonder about his place in Hell’s Kitchen.

Secrets of Wakanda

A major subplot of MAN WITHOUT FEAR revolved around Foggy Nelson helping T’Challa out on the sly by setting him up with the forged Mr. Okonwko identity. In the beginning of the story, the former king of Wakanda promised Daredevil’s best friend that this act of kindness would not have a negative effect on him. That proved a false statement, with Homeland Security grabbing Nelson and T’Challa during Fear Itself. With everything going on, the latter freed them both and later snuck into a federal building to deleted every trace of the case against Nelson.

Next, Reginald Hudlin and Denys Cowan chronicle Steve Rogers’ very first trip to Wakanda in CAPTAIN AMERICA/BLACK PANTHER: FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS.
