Cort Lane reveals news about upcoming projects and future storylines!

Marvel fans were treated to a variety of exciting announcements and first looks at this year’s WonderCon. From voice cast reveals to sneak peeks at never before seen shorts, Marvel Animation: From Pencil To Screen was the place to be for the scoop on Marvel’s latest animation news.

Cort Lane, Marvel’s SVP, Animation & Family Entertainment spoke to Marvel.com exclusively to give us even more insight to the production and development of these exciting new projects.

During the panel it was teased that “Marvel’s Avengers: Black Panther’s Quest” would introduce a new stylistic direction, “by simplifying and streamlining the character animation—and make it a little more cartoony, for lack of a better term—more expressive with the faces,” explained Lane.

“This is at its heart a story of a brother and a sister, who love each other but have conflict and humor—he’s overprotective, she’s sassy and frustrated that her brother won’t let her do stuff—let that character story play out better in animation, by really having the character faces express that,” furthered Lane. The new style sets the pace for a new tone as well, Lane defined, “It’s also a high stakes espionage story that travels around the world with lots of sleek movement and shadows, and so the style of the animation also accomplishes that as well. It’s different than a straight ahead super hero story because it’s got those elements.”

The always popular “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout!” series is in for a few stylistic changes as well. Speaking again about design, on the panel, writer and story consultant Mairghread Scott teased that there would be a huge change in animation styles, specifically for the Black Vortex arc. “Midway through the season, the Collector gets his revenge and he pushes them to the point where they have to escape. During that escape they are sent to different dimensions separate from each other. Now they have to find a way back to each other.”

Lane hesitated, as not to reveal too much, “Each dimension is animated in a different style—the styles are fascinating. I wish I could say more! Some of them are inspired by classic animation styles, some of them are unique to the character, it allows us to push styles and visuals.” Lane was emphatic, “It is the most stunning animation we have produced.”

The Guardians will also delve more into the shared universe with a Symbiote storyline which brings together shared alien specimens, once again bringing in the ever-popular Venom along with the biggest villain in the galaxy, Thanos.

As if proof was needed that the new animated “Marvel Rising” was going to be big, a group of cosplayers that showed up to the panel in completely detailed outfits was the confirmation. The group’s devotion brought a tear to Lane’s eye, “To see this massive group of young women and girls already dressing as these characters, band together as a team for something that hasn’t even been seen yet—we haven’t show a second of footage—and they’re already embracing them as a group.”

There is an anime influence on this series which helps push the animation further for the character’s unique emotions, Squirrel Girl in particular, “The one thing I’ll reveal,” divulged Lane, “Because she’s just so goofy, [at one point] things aren’t going well and she goes, ‘We need to attack, anime style!’ and then they literally get anime faces.”

“Marvel Rising” will consist of six four-minute digital shorts focused on Ghost-Spider’s point of view, followed by a feature-length animated film. The film is grounded in a relationship between two best girl friends, Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl.

The pair prove to be typical young girls, trying to find themselves and kicking butt along the way. “Because they’re young people with different personalities, they don’t always get along and that’s good,” Lane asserted. “Because girls want to see some conflicts and interesting dynamics between the characters. Ultimately each of them wants to be the best version of themselves—prove themselves, doubting themselves—and they have that in common.”

Lane believes the audience will related to the team’s intuition, “When they decide at the end to stick together—it comes very naturally out of the story that it’s just young people trying to find their way.”

Big announcements at WonderCon 2018!

Marvel Animation panels are always a packed house thanks to continuing storylines for our favorite heroes, and new and interesting art styles that fans love to see. This year’s WonderCon panel was no exception, as fans waited excitedly to see what would be revealed during Marvel Animation: From Pencil To Screen.

The crowded panel room were welcomed by Cort Lane, Marvel’s SVP, Animation & Family Entertainment, who lead a panel featuring Kalia Ramirez, Director, Family Entertainment – Development & Partnerships; Harrison Wilcox, Senior Director, Television, Development & Production; Eric Radomski, SVP, Production & Creative Director, Animation; Jeff Allen, Supervising Director; Mairghread Scott, writer and story consultant; and Collette Sunderman, Voice Director, “Marvel’s Spider-Man.”

First up was big news for fans of “Marvel’s Avengers,” Lane described season five as a Black Panther story and is thusly titled, “Marvel’s Avengers: Black Panther’s Quest.” Along with the addition of this new hero comes a design change that simplifies the style and conceptualizes a brand new look. The new style reflects T’Challa’s sleek fighting style that sets a new tone for the production design.

James Mathis continues to voice T’Challa and the big reveal was that his sister Shuri will be voiced by Daisy Lightfoot. Recording as an ensemble to voice the Wakandan siblings reflects the core of the season where togetherness reigns as Black Panther must battle an old foe, the Shadow Council.

Fan-favorite “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout!” integrates the Guardians with the Disney California Adventure Ride attraction and the fallout of dealing with the Collector. Scott teased this season the Guardians will quite literally get to explore the galaxy even more, including further exploration of the Symbiote storyline. Expeditions into different dimensions also brings about the possibility of changing animation styles.

Marvel Funko Shorts have always been a hit with fans, and at the panel the audience was treated to the premiere viewing of the new short, “Rooftop Rock,” which features Spider-Gwen and Marvel’s most popular villain, Venom.

The Marvel LEGO collaboration brings toys and animation together and the panel was the perfect opportunity to announce the voice cast for “LEGO Marvel Super Heroes – Black Panther: Trouble in Wakanda.” James Mathis III returns to his role as T’Challa/Black Panther, along with previously announced Daisy Lightfoot as Shuri. The cast is rounded out with Keston John (Killmonger), Yvette Nicole Brown (Okoye), Trevor Devall (Klaw), Mick Wingert (Iron Man), Travis Willingham (Thor), Roger Craig Smith (Captain America), Laura Bailey (Black Widow), Liam O’Brien (Doctor Strange), Issac C. Singleton Jr. (Thanos), and the ever popular Fred Tatasciore (Hulk).

The biggest cheer of the panel was the announcement of “Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors.” Fans were so excited, cosplayers already appeared on the show floor with fully detailed costumes, with little to no information to go on. The six four-minute digital shorts will be accompanied by a feature length animated film to be released later this year.

The content features an all-star lineup of voice talent, Dove Cameron (Ghost Spider), Chloe Bennet (Quake), Tyler Posey (Inferno), Booboo Stewart (Exile), Kathreen Kavari (Ms. Marvel), Milana Vanytrub (Squirrel Girl), Cierra Ramirez (America Chavez), Kamil McFadden (Patriot), Skai Jackson (Gloria), Kim Raver (Captain Marvel), Ming-na Wen (Hala), Steven Weber (Captain George Stacy), and Dee Bradley Baker who takes on the voices of Lockjaw & Tippy Toe.

Lane emphasized the inclusivity of Marvel, “It’s meant for all kids but we’re particularly excited to bring together these new and very exciting characters that have already sort of garnered big fan attention for years.”

“There are so many strong, interesting, and diverse female characters—body types, great personalities, individual strengths, so we’re so excited about that,” said Lane enthusiastically.

Watch the action-packed finale this weekend on Disney XD!

After a season full of surprises, the second season of “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” concludes this weekend with a huge adventure where the Guardians must use the combined power of Nova, the Avengers, and the warriors of Asgard to stop Magus, rescue Warlock’s consciousness, and save the galaxy from destruction.

We talked with SVP, Animation & Family Entertainment, Cort Lane who told us how pleased he was with the stunning animation and different worlds that made up this season’s epic storyline.

Marvel.com: This season has been so much fun, from introducing Nova to working with the Avengers, did you go into the series knowing you’d be using so many characters from the Marvel universe?

Cort Lane: We knew we were going to kick off with a fight with the Avengers. We knew that we were going to tell this extended Adam Warlock story that would reveal itself over time—and that it would involve other characters—so yeah, we knew the scope would be huge. I mean, part of the fun of working with the Guardians of the Galaxy is we can explore the Marvel cosmic universe in a way that allows so much creative freedom. There’s so many places, so many stories to tell, and so many weird bizarre characters for the Guardians to play against.

Marvel.com: This season Peter dealt with his dad and sister Captain Victoria, would you say familial relations seems to have been the tie that binds the whole season together?

Cort Lane: The Guardians talk about being a family and what family means, and being part of something bigger than yourself is so important, what you can do for the world and what you can do for people closest to you. So yeah, family is what the Guardians is about, they had formed their own family—none of them have a family of their own, truly—so they formed this bizarre family and somehow it makes them all better people because, let’s face it, most of them have done some not so great things before they joined this family.

Marvel.com: It’s fun how all of the “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” episodes are always named after songs. What was the process for choosing the songs in season 2?

Cort Lane: When we have story summits and break the stories, we know thematically what the story is about and then Marty Eisenberg and Harrison Wilcox—who run those story summits—they really have to wrack their brains to try and come up with titles based on those classic songs. Obviously, music being a part of the Guardians brand—from time to time we have little bits of classic 70s and 80s pop and rock music to use—being able to make that connection to the song titles is just a nice vehicle for us to connect to the greater franchise feel.

Marvel.com: Cosmo is a fan favorite and was a big part of this season. What was the decision to have him play a key role, and will we see him return for season 3?

Cort Lane: We are big Cosmo fans and we almost feel like he’s an extra member of the team. We utilized him a lot because we think that there’s something really unique that we can do in animation different than the films, in leveraging that character. We really like his personality and his attitude.

Marvel.com: This season goes deep into Marvel cosmic lore with the introduction of Adam Warlock and Magus. It’s been a great extension for fans of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies and those who are anticipating “Infinity War.” Was that always the goal from the beginning of the season?

Cort Lane: It’s more organic. When we start writing these episodes, it’s far more than a year before they air. So we were just going in our own direction when we decided we wanted to tell an Adam Warlock story. For us, it’s just about exploring all the parts of the Marvel universe that we think are interesting from a storytelling perspective for the show, but it’s still capturing some of the feel of the franchise that people know from the film.

Marvel.com: This season with the introduction of Tana Nile, it made me wonder if we could see a version of Gamora’s Graces come into action in the future?

Cort Lane: We’ve never talked about that, that’s something we should bring up! That’s fun, I’ll bring that up to the series executives.

Marvel.com: After a fun-filled season, what can we look forward to in season 3?

Cort Lane: Season 3…is even weirder. In the most wonderful way. We begin the season mirroring the Mission: Breakout! storyline from the ride at California Adventure and just as in the ride, they get away from the Collector, but now we get to see what happens when the Collector seeks out revenge, and that’s a fun story in and of itself.

It’s also a story about wish fulfillment, the Guardians sort of get everything that they want and we get to see how that goes; well or not so well, for them individually. After getting away from the Collector and sort of being very successful and happy, things start to unravel very quickly as the Collector seeks revenge.

Be sure to catch the season finale episodes of “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy,” “You’re No Good” (Airing at 8:00 – 8:30 AM EST) and “Behind Gold Eyes” (Airing at 8:30 – 9:00 AM EST), on Sunday, November 12 on Disney XD!
