Everything you need to know about Marvel Games, this week!

True Believers, every Tuesday, make your way over to Marvel.com for a rundown of all this week’s Marvel Games news, from console game releases to character drops to mobile event updates, and more!

Thanos isn’t only terrorizing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes on-screen with the April 27 release of Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Infinity War.” Starting this week, the Mad Titan will have our heroes scrambling to assemble across seven titles in Marvel Games roster. Now let’s get on to what cataclysmic events we can expect to see this week and what we can tease for the remaining participating titles!

MARVEL CONTEST OF CHAMPIONS

Are you ready to earn the rare title of “Infinity Warrior”? Black Panther’s Chadwick Boseman and Spider-Man’s Tom Holland will be kicking off their Champion Challenge tomorrow, Thursday, April 19, and run to May 17, to get you trained for the Contest’s upcoming Infinity War event!

Beginning on Wednesday, April 25, you can expect to find four new events in-game with the latest build update, including the “Infinity Nightmare” story quest, a daily “Infinity Trials” quest,” the solo “Vanquishing Blows” challenge, and “Infinity Dungeons,” which features social co-op quests.

  • TRIALS OF THE MAD TITAN (April 25 – June 6)
The powers of the Battlerealm’s Infinity Stones have spread throughout the Contest, leaving pockets of their condensed energies ripe for the picking. Cut your teeth on foes infused with the power of the Stones each day, and then collect Boosts that will temporarily give you access to the unique powers offered by each Stone! Combine these boosts on the final day each week to take on power enemies in the Trial of Omniscience, where the greatest rewards and most dangerous enemies lie.
  • INFINITY DUNGEONS (Available for a limited time only!)
Team up with another Summoner to battle through an endless series of Rooms. Even better, they don’t have to be in your alliance! Strategize with them while in the Dungeon with the new Quick Chat feature. Each Dungeon has a unique theme depending on the day you play, including randomized Buffs on Nodes that are different every time you play. The further you go, the harder it becomes, and the better the rewards. Once you completed a Room, you must decide whether to push on to the next and more difficult Room, or conclude the Dungeon and collect the points and rewards you’ve earned so far. Points earn you a new currency called Dark Artifacts. Use these vessels of dark power to purchase new Infinity Dungeon Crystals containing Champions.

Cosmic warrior Proxima Midnight entered the Battlerealm last week, but she is never too far from her other half. Expect the arrival of Corvus Glaive and others invading the Battlerealm rolling out over the next few weeks!

MARVEL PUZZLE QUEST

Right out the gate, on Thursday, April 19, Captain America (Infinity War) brings his A-game, doing what’s right and saving the world one clandestine mission at a time. Pick up Captain America (Infinity War) here.

The good-all-around playable character is perfect for use in teams where you want to shut down problematic enemy powers. Harness the Super-Soldier’s powers during the “Come and Get Me Event,” running April 19 to April 22!

  • Rope-a-Dope allows Cap to distract the enemy with a false advance, misleading them and leaving their backline vulnerable
  • Coup de Grace lets Cap summon all his strength to land a finishing blow
  • Man Without Country means our hero can still protect the innocent with covert tactics
  • Lastly, Captain America can reach down and lift up his fallen ally and give a boost of health with On Your Feet, Soldier!

We gave you a taste of Supports early this month, you can expect plenty of Infinity War tie-in items and bonuses to help your heroes throughout the Event, kicking off starting on April 24!

MARVEL STRIKE FORCE

Never one to walk away from a challenge, the new action-RPG mobile game, available on iOS and Android, will have “Avengers: Infinity War” characters Thanos, Vision, Star-Lord, Loki, and Doctor Strange, assembling. You can expect Thanos timed raids and the Thanos legendary event kicking off Thursday, April 19!

MARVEL AVENGERS ACADEMY

In the world of Marvel Avengers Academy, our young heroes can’t seem to catch a break between exams and super villains hellbent on destruction. Marvel.com writer Justin Synder caught a few minutes between classes to chat with Allen Warner, Lead Narrative Designer at TinyCo, to get you all the details on the Jessica Jones event, inspired by “Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” the first two seasons streaming exclusively on Netflix.

Marvel.com: What brings Kilgrave out of the woods now?

Allen Warner: New York has been decimated by the recent attacks of government-created Hulks, and the entire world is panicked because of the imminent arrival of Thanos. Being the sleazy manipulator he is, Kilgrave takes advantage of the chaos by using his mind-control powers to set the city’s most powerful crime families against one another. As they knock each other out one by one, he assumes control of their resources and minions, quickly turning himself into the new kingpin of crime. As you can guess, this immediately puts him in the crosshairs of not only the Defenders and the Avengers, but rival criminal masterminds like Madame Gao and Kingpin.

Marvel.com: Jessica has quite a history with him. How will their past influence the event and her story?

Allen Warner: In our world, they’re both younger, and have yet to really cross paths. As an investigator and a hero, Jessica knows about the seedy side of the city, so she knows about Kilgrave being an arrogant scumbag who’s done horrible things, but it isn’t as personal or serious as it’s been portrayed in the comics and TV show. That being said, she doesn’t have any respect or patience for manipulative people like Kilgrave, so she takes it upon herself to shut down his operation, and make it very clear that he isn’t welcome in her city.

Marvel.com: What new faces will we see join the Academy as Kilgrave puts his scheme into action?

Allen Warner: Our new character this event is the Hood. We thought it would be cool to being in an antihero who would have a personal vendetta against Kilgrave for ruining his own criminal operation. The Hood has an amazing power-set, and some interesting history to play off with characters like Doctor Strange and Mysterio and Mephisto, so it made for some really cool interactions and stories. His visual levels look awesome, and his top visual rank is probably the most wicked looking character we’ve ever featured in Avengers Academy.

In addition to the Hood, we’ll also be bringing back Jessica Jones, Hellcat, and Luke Cage. These are a few of my favorite characters we’ve ever featured in the game from their visuals to their animations to their stories. It’s a lot of fun to bring them back together again along with some of the other Defenders to see how they deal with Kilgrave, and how they view the looming threat of Thanos.

Marvel.com: Seems like our heroes will need some new tech to combat Kilgrave and his mind control abilities. Who suits up in new gear to bring the fight to Purple Man?

Allen Warner: We’re adding awesome new outfits for Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Spider-Woman. Two are all-time classics from the comics, and the third is a more obscure choice that’s a perfect fit for dealing with both Kilgrave, and the threat on the horizon. Each one completely changes the look and vibe of their respective character, and I think people are really going to enjoy adding them to their campus.

Marvel.com: Kilgrave as a villain differs quite a bit from most we’ve seen at the academy. What was it like to write him and this story?

Allen Warner: Having removed the most atrocious acts that he hasn’t committed in our universe, we’re left with an arrogant, egotistical, sarcastic, insecure sociopath, which actually makes him pretty similar to quite a few of our villains, and even a few of our “heroes.” It was actually really interesting to bounce those traits off of the other characters, and see how they each react. One of my favorite things about the story in this event is that it’s the first time we’ve spent a lot of time watching the various villains interact, and it’s really interesting to see the natural hierarchy, and in some cases, unexpected heroism, that results from their rivalries. It turns out that heroes like Jessica Jones aren’t the only ones who want to knock the smirk off Kilgrave’s face.

Marvel.com: Thanos still lurks on the horizon. Can we expect to see him make his move soon?

Allen Warner: VERY SOON. I can’t wait to finally reveal the secret origin of the Avengers Academy universe, and talk about all of the amazing new heroes and outfits we created to help our heroes win the Infinity War.

Channel the Power Woman in her event starting this Thursday, April 12. Download the mobile game on Google Play and iTunes.

Bill also helped launch the Disney Kingdom imprint and was part of the team that co-created the modern day Guardians of the Galaxy. Bill is now Executive Creative Director for Marvel Games, where he uses his knowledge and passion for the House of Ideas to collaborate with partners around the world on hit titles for console, PC and mobile devices.

Every so often, Bill and talented members of the Marvel Games team join us to share their stories as well as exclusive news and scoops on what’s happening in the world of gaming!

Hello, friends! On the road to Marvel’s Spider-Man you’ve waited patiently and not so patiently – I’m looking at you @GameOverGreggy – for information on the highly anticipated blockbuster action game that Marvel Games, Insomniac Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment are creating exclusively for PlayStation 4 consoles. You’ve tweeted, posted analysis and theory videos, created fan art, cosplayed and even organized into the #SpideySquad…and we’re now thrilled to announce that you can play “Marvel’s Spider-Man” on Friday, September 7, 2018! Pre-Order Now!

And feast your eyes on the final box cover art!

The strong red background and confident pose of our more experienced hero sends an immediate message to the world that this is a bold new take on everyone’s favorite Web-Slinger. To showcase the unique look of our Spider-Man in his all-new swanky Advanced Suit, his pose takes inspiration from over 50 years of classic Spider-Man comic book covers and art. Educated fans of the Wall-Crawler will see nods to the work of J. Scott Campbell, Mark Bagley, John Romita Sr., John Romita Jr., Joe Quesada and (of course) Steve Ditko, as well as many other iconic Spider-Man artists.

You’ll see this box art on the standard edition of “Marvel’s Spider-Man” when it’s available at retail and digitally for $59.99. And while many of you have requested that we show you the cover for the game, many more have asked: “Will there be a Digital Deluxe and Collector’s Editions of the game?” You got it  –  we’re delivering both!

The Digital Deluxe Edition of the game ($79.99) will include a copy of the game as well as new story chapters with our post-launch DLC series “The City That Never Sleeps”. That’s right, we’ll be supporting the game post-launch with three new chapters featuring new missions, characters, Spider-Man suits and villains I can’t wait to tell you about! Meanwhile, if you pre-order the Digital Deluxe Edition, you’ll also receive by mail this limited edition collectible FiGPiN featuring Spider-Man in the iconic pose from the box cover art.

For those mega Spider-Man fans craving even more amazing collectibles, you should check out the Collector’s Edition ($149.99), which includes all of the content from the Digital Deluxe Edition, as well as a Steelbook case featuring the iconic white spider, a Mini Artbook from our friends at Titan Books, and an awesome Marvel’s Spider-Man statue by the geniuses at Gentle Giant! You’ll notice we haven’t revealed the entire Collector’s Edition statue, just Spider-Man perched on top of something. What could he be crouched on? Stay tuned!

No matter where you buy it, or which Edition you select, if you pre-order you’ll get special items. Whether it’s a Spidey Suit Pack featuring the fan-favorite Spider-Punk suit from the Spider-Verse comics event (as well as two additional suits we will reveal this summer), the Spider-Drone gadget, a PSN Avatar, an original PS4 theme designed by renowned artist Adi Granov, or extra skill points to unlock your favorite Spider-Man talents sooner – our pre-order bonus is the total package! Check out this video of the Spider-Punk suit in action:

And if that’s not enough, we’re revealing even more details in the cover story of this month’s issue of Game Informer! The GI crew visited the Insomniac Games studio (which is conveniently just 15 minutes from the Marvel Games office), went hands-on with Marvel’s Spider-Man, talked to myself – and Insomniac Creative Director Bryan Intihar, Art Director Jacinda Chew and more members of the dev team — and will bring you the biggest look at the game yet! Plus we asked famed AMAZING SPIDER-MAN cover artist Alex Ross to create this powerful painting for the issue’s cover!

Learn more about what went into the biggest video game release of 2018!

Eric Monacelli, Senior Producer, Marvel Games:

Deciding to team with Insomniac Games and PlayStation to develop “Marvel’s Spider-Man” was a no-brainer. What came next, well, that took some mental gymnastics. When you have the power and responsibility to work with a beloved character whose history is so rich and so layered–a character that many feel is the world’s greatest hero, and maybe even the greatest character in fiction itself–we knew we had to thwip up something original yet familiar, and, of course, amazing and spectacular.

First, our creative teams instantly bonded when we realized we all shared a similar childhood memory of fighting pretend villains while slinging imaginary webs in Spider-Man underwear. Next, we recognized that collaborating with some of the tremendous talent working on Spider-Man comic books today would be essential. That’s when writers Dan Slott and Christos Gage swung into our Spidey Web of Trust. The teams at Insomniac Games, PlayStation, and Marvel Games have been hard at work on making the game great since then. Here’s a glimpse into our shared vision from some of our biggest Web Heads:

If you want to hear more from the Marvel writers contributing to the project, head over to the This Week in Marvel podcast to listen to Dan Slott and Christos Gage talk more in-depth about what’s it been like to write and collaborate on the game of our (and hopefully your) dreams.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man” launches in 2018. Mark your calendars and get ready for greatness!

Marvel Games Executive Creative Director Bill Rosemann provides a web slinging update!

True story: There was once a young boy who sat cross-legged on the floor of his family room, staring up wide-eyed and slack-jawed as Spider-Man swung across his TV screen during a rerun of his classic ‘60s cartoon. Decades later, that same boy – who was now improbably working for the House of Ideas – sat in the historic Shrine Auditorium, staring up wide-eyed and slack-jawed as Spider-Man swung across the massive theater screen during the world-premiere gameplay at the PlayStation Media Showcase.

You win a No-Prize if you guessed that young boy grew up to be me. After years of faithfully reciting “with great power there must also come great responsibility”, I am humbled and hyped to be working with my friends at Insomniac Games and Sony Interactive Entertainment on “Marvel’s Spider-Man,” which will hit PlayStation 4 in 2018.

Okay, let’s see that sweet gameplay!

We hope that gave you a taste of the amazing abilities of our 23 year-old Spider-Man. After battling for eight years to keep the city safe, Peter Parker is an experienced and confident hero who combines wall-crawling, dodges, aerial combat, parkour moves, self-made tech, and his world-famous webs – oh, and also his whip-smart wise cracks – in an acrobatic, intelligent and improvisational combat style. And did I mention our obsession with bringing you the ultimate expression of web-swinging?

In addition to celebrating Spider-Man’s spectacular powers, we’re also showcasing his awesome rogues gallery and supporting cast, which – if you connected the dots in the gameplay – includes the fearsome Mr. Negative, whose alter ego just so happens to be Martin Li, the philanthropist that Peter’s Aunt May works for! If there’s one thing everyone working on the game has learned after reading, watching and playing everything Spidey, his best stories focus on the sparks that fly when his civilian and costumed worlds collide.

Speaking of worlds colliding, while we’re exploring the classic themes of power and responsibility, we’re also combining familiar faces with newer characters that you may not have yet encountered, all swirling together in an unpredictable and changing Manhattan.

On behalf of the entire team behind “Marvel’s Spider-Man,” we thank you for joining us on this journey, and we hope the E3 gameplay revealed the type of combat, traversal, story and cinematics that will allow you experience the rollercoaster ride that is the life of Peter Parker as never before…and will also leave you, just like that young boy many years ago, wide-eyed and slack-jawed.

Your Man @ Marvel,

Bill Rosemann
