Spidey saved, of all people, the Arranger from being killed by the Beetle in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #164, but the British-born Knight and Fogg managed to accomplish the awful act in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #165.

Spidey swore to bring his English enemies to justice in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #166, and while attempting this action acquired amnesia from a bump on the noggin. He got better in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #167 just in time to witness Fogg’s betrayal of Knight. The crafty Chameleon channeled several criminals’ consternation with the wallcrawler into all-out attack in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #64, but when the face-changer faked them out in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #65, they joined with their webby target to put a crimp in the Chameleon’s cranium. Robbie Robertson confronted the murderous Tombstone in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #139, but Spidey took over when Robbie landed in the hospital from the criminal’s tender mercies in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #140.

The Punisher took up the fight against Tombstone in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #141, while Spidey agonized over the fact of Robbie’s withholding of evidence from the police in his past. Ultimately, the webslinger brought Tombstone to justice in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #142, but Robbie needed to face his own crime, too.

Peter’s old friend Betty Leeds joined a cult called the Students of Love in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #40 and Spidey tried to rescue her in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #41, but it came down to Flash Thompson to make the real effort to save her in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #42, and work with the webslinger to deprogram Betty in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #43.

After a breezy jaunt to England to stop the Roxxon Corporation from selling a super-weapon to the British government in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #22, our hero returned to the States to stop Slyde in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #23, mash the Mauler in PETER PARKER, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #122, and find himself framed for murder in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #123. Of course, that’s above and beyond vying with the Vulture in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #24, attacking aliens in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #25, and granting second chances to crooks in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #26.

He confronted the Punisher over how to deal with the gangs in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #285, and failed to stop the Rose from killing a cop in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #286. Daredevil turned up the heat for the wallcrawler and the Rose stood revealed as the Kingpin’s son Richard in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #287, while in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #288 the Kingpin regained his throne as Spidey and a few friends fought to prevent just that.

The Headhunter tried to hang Spidey out to dry in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #27 while the webslinger prevented Liberty’s torch from being stolen in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #28. During an overseas trip, Spidey clashed with Wolverine, while his Daily Bugle colleague Ned Leeds was killed in SPIDER-MAN VS. WOLVERINE #1, and Ned was posthumously revealed as the Hobgoblin – with Jack O’ Lantern becoming the new Hobgoblin — in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #289. Following a serious of seemingly never-ending threats, Peter Parker proposed to Mary Jane Watson in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #290, but for reasons of her own, she said “no” in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #291 and left for her hometown of Pittsburgh. To top it off, a shadowy figure shoved Peter in front of a subway car in WEB OF SPIDER-MAN #18. Later, Spidey failed to prevent S.H.I.E.L.D. from neutralizing a kid with powers in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #118, and the Black Cat exercised her claws on Sabretooth in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #119.

Back home again, Peter found his apartment building infested with thugs and hoods in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #120, and offered his unique point-of-view on a bank robbery in SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #121.
