Thanos makes his big move in the mobile game!

When Captain Marvel and A-Force discover a new interstellar threat bearing down on Earth, they need all hands on deck to defend the planet in “Marvel Avengers Academy”!

Thanos has sent his warrior Proxima Midnight to deal with Earth’s heroes, and the good guys don’t realize that her arrival signals just the beginning of a much larger attack. The alien threat looms large, so suit up, enroll your favorite heroes, and get ready to fight the coming storm.

We grabbed a few minutes with Allen Warner, Lead Narrative Designer at TinyCo, to uncover more about Proxima and Thanos’ schemes.

Marvel.com: How does Proxima Midnighta member of Thanos’ evil Black Orderfind herself at Avengers Academy? Until now, we’ve heard very little of Thanos around campus.

Allen Warner: Thanos has been teased going all the way back to our original Guardians of the Galaxy event—our first major event in the game—but we’ve yet to see his face. We know that his presence looms large in outer space, that he went to school with the Guardians, Captain Marvel, and the other cosmic heroes, and that he took that school over, and turned it into his personal headquarters. More importantly, we know that he played a pivotal role in how the world of “Avengers Academy” came to be. He and the faculty have met before, and they’ve been preparing for years for his inevitable return. The time has finally arrived, and both he and Nick Fury have their Infinity Gauntlets ready.

Proxima Midnight is Thanos’s most powerful warrior, so he sends her to scout the campus, and gauge the heroes while he tends to the last couple steps of his soon to be revealed master plan.

Marvel.com: Captain Marvel and A-Force are the first ones to pick up on Proxima’s presence. With them featuring here, will players have the opportunity to recruit everyone again?

Allen Warner: Yes, players will have another opportunity to recruit Captain Marvel, Singularity, America Chavez, and more. As with our first A-Force event, we really want to showcase all of the amazing female heroes in the Marvel Universe. You can expect to see the return of Angela, Pepper Potts, and many, many more awesome heroes, including the debut of Red She-Hulk. We’ve been wanting to get her into the game for a really long time, and I think players will really love her visuals, animations, and stories. She turned out really cool.

Marvel.com: Proxima poses a powerful threat to our heroes and the entire planet. How do they hope to stop her?

Allen Warner: Our heroes will battle Proxima Midnight and some special bosses, while they also train new recruits to battle Thanos’s army of Chitauri invaders.

Marvel.com: There are some interesting facing joining the Academy this time around. Can you give us the run down?

Allen Warner: In addition to Red She-Hulk, players will have the opportunity to recruit our popular original newscaster character, who, ever since the Doctor Strange event, has been fondly known as the Newscaster Supreme. She’s been beloved by our players since the game began and it’s awesome to see her finally become a fully playable character. She has a really cool backstory that I don’t think anyone will see coming, which plays into the history and future of Avengers Academy. Her visual levels will be a big surprise; they turned out awesome.

We’re also adding some of our favorite henchmen as playable characters. Anyone who plays the game knows that there’s a running storyline about the various henchmen from invading forces abandoning their villainous leaders when things go bad to live in the bushes of Avengers Academy. They’ve created their own sort of utopian henchmen society where no one tells them what to do or turns them into cannon fodder. It’s a storyline I’ve had a lot of fun with over the course of the game because it showcases them as very relatable, everyman-type people who are really just trying to enjoy their lives and get by, but keep getting pulled into superhuman fisticuffs and shenanigans. This time around, players will be able to recruit an A.I.M. Scientist, a Chitauri Soldier, and an Iron Legion Robot, and make them official members of Avengers Academy.

This event and all of these characters will be fun and understandable for brand-new players, but this is also a thank you to our longtime players as we add some fan-favorite original characters, and pay off some long-running storylines.

Marvel.com: With each new event, some of our favorite students start sporting new threads. Who will gear up to battle Proxima and her minions?

Allen Warner: There will be new outfits for Captain Marvel, Angela, and Pepper Potts. One is a classic look from the comics, one is a more modern look from the comics, and one takes inspiration from a look from the comics, but has never been seen before. All of them turned out amazing thanks to our awesome art team!

Marvel.com: Knowing Thanos sent Proxima to Earth, should we expect to see the Mad Titan himself sooner rather than later?

Allen Warner: You should expect to see him very soon, and once he arrives, things will never be the same.

Marvel.com: We’re coming up on two years since the launch of “Marvel Avengers Academy.” Do you have anything planned for the second anniversary?

Allen Warner: We’re going to be introducing some really cool new features and mechanics along with more characters and outfits—characters from upcoming films and TV shows, characters who are brand-new to comics and the Marvel Universe, and a collection of icons who have been around for decades. It’s an exciting time for “Avengers Academy,” and we want to say thank you to all of our passionate, creative, dedicated fans for their support, whether they just started playing or have been with us from the very beginning.

Red She-Hulk kicks off a gamma-infused new mission that also includes The Leader, Winter Soldier, Zzzax, and more!

Get out your Geiger counters, because there’s a radioactive explosion coming to “Marvel: Avengers Alliance”!

The latest Spec Op centers on the Hulk family of characters, introducing Betty Ross’ irradiated alter ego of Red She-Hulk to the game while also bringing in The Leader, Winter Soldier, and Zzzax. We spoke to Associate Producer Tony Sherrill about these smashing new developments.

Marvel.com: What’s the story behind the latest Spec Op?

Tony Sherrill: The Leader has big plans and the first step is kidnapping Betty Ross, infusing her with red gamma radiation and turning her into a monster, which only he controls. Seeing red, Red Hulk is desperate to find her and smash the kidnapper. It’s up to S.H.I.E.L.D. to find her and the kidnapper first, before an angered Red Hulk does and [figures] out what exactly the Leader is planning.

Marvel.com: How did you settle on Red She-Hulk as the reward hero?

Tony Sherrill: Out of 31 Spec Ops we hadn’t really done that much with the Hulk family, so it was time to dedicate a Spec Op to them. Red She-Hulk had been planned for release at least two years ago, but she was bumped to make room for movie themed Spec Ops and such. Plus she’s Red Hulk’s daughter and as Betty Ross has some history with Hulk, so she really was the perfect fit as the reward hero.

Marvel.com: What skills and abilities does Red She-Hulk bring to the team?

Tony Sherrill: Red She-Hulk has a passive ability called Gamma Energy which increases Attack, Defense, Accuracy, and Evasion, plus restores some health and stamina when gained. Her Gamma Girl passive allows her to gain Gamma Energy when she attacks or is attacked. The Gamma Energy status can also be gained by using her first three attacks, Body Blow, Cage Fight, and Curb Stomp. Body Blow is a melee attack that applies Exhausted and Fumbling. Cage Fight is a melee attack that applies Flanked, Staggered, and Off-balance. Curb Stomp is a melee ground attack that applies Aftershock, Hobbled, and Winded to all enemies. All of this can be exploited with her final move, Savage Strike. Savage Strike has Exploit Opportunity, Ignore Defense, and Unleash Anger. Unleash Anger consumes all stacks of Gamma Energy to deal even more damage. Ouch.

One more thing I’d like to mention about Red She-Hulk is that she has another passive called Beat the Heat, which protects against single target energy and radiation attacks. Another part of her Gamma Girl passive makes her immune to Radiation Effects. Beat the Heat plays very nicely with Gamma Girl, as the more she is attacked, the more Gamma Energy she will gain, which in turn increases her stats and heals her some. She can only gain a maximum of five stacks of Gamma Energy.

Marvel.com: Zzzax is a cool and interesting choice for a group boss—how did that come about?

Tony Sherrill: We knew we were dedicating this Spec Op to the Hulks, so now came the fun part of deciding which bad guys to punch in the face. Hulk has fought and defeated Zzzax on several occasions in the comics, but we also wanted to use the Leader. The Leader didn’t really feel like a Group Boss. He’s more like the man with the plan, so we settled on the 40’ tall—about 12’ in [the game]—electromagnetic being of psionic energy.

Marvel.com: Winter Soldier is a long-awaited hero—what made now the time to have him as the Lockbox reward?

Tony Sherrill: As the Leader’s plan slowly unfolds his Supernatural Intelligence comes in to play, as he’s using his Telepathy to control certain individuals in order to complete his main objective. The Winter Soldier is one of those individuals.

Marvel.com: What other villains and heroes will play a major role in this Spec Op?

Tony Sherrill: For villains we’ll have Winter Soldier, Abomination, Absorbing Man, and Worthy She-Hulk aka Skirn, Breaker of Men as mini-bosses. As far as hero deploys are concerned we have Molly Hayes, Falcon, Spider-Girl (Anya Corazon), Captain America, Hawkeye, and Black Widow as the required heroes for this gamma infused Spec Op.

Marvel.com: What types of tech will we be researching as we go?

Tony Sherrill: The Contamination Set is the new set for this Spec Op, although only one of the four pieces is linked to research. That’s the Radiation Injector. This weapon has a new status called Radiation Fatigue, which causes the enemy to take extra damage from radiation attacks. If you have another piece of the set equipped then this weapon gains a new status called Irradiated, which is like a form of Radiation Exposure that cannot be removed. The other three pieces are the Limited Edition Big Brother, the Photon Ray, which is won in the Daily Bonus Spin, and the Epic Boss Drop named Premonition Actuator.

The Premonition Actuator is a quick action that applies Clairvoyance (Mirror Image) to your entire team. If you have another piece of the set equipped then this weapon will also have a high chance of applying Mind Control to the entire enemy team.

The Photon Ray applies the Gamma Exposure and Radiation Exposure statuses. With its set bonus it Exploits Radiation Fatigue, in addition to doing Overexposure, which is like Hemorrhage for Radiation Exposure.

My personal favorite is the Big Brother and not just because I’m a big brother. This weapon has a three round cooldown, but each piece of the set you have equipped will reduce the cool down by one. The Big Brother places a buff status on the Agent called Nuclear Launch Detected. If the Agent is eliminated then the launch is prevented. If not, then three turns later a nuke will drop. This nuke has the Catastrophic, Deadly Crits, and High Crits statuses that will apply three stacks of Radiation Exposure, Exhausted, Neutralized, and Staggered on the entire enemy team. The set bonus will also apply Chaos Shot and Irradiated on all enemies.

Join “Marvel: Avengers Alliance” and play the latest Spec Op, coming soon!

Betty Ross' rampaging alter ego first appeared five years ago this month!

Don’t let the number of metaphorical candles on the metaphorical cake fool you, because Red She-Hulk’s actually been kicking around the Marvel Universe for a lot longer than five years.

Betty Ross first appeared as the human daughter of General “Thunderbolt” Ross over 52 years ago in INCREDIBLE HULK #1. She became Bruce Banner’s closest ally, and on-again off-again girlfriend, for the next few decades. She flirted with becoming a super powered individual back in 1973’s INCREDIBLE HULK #168 when M.O.D.O.K. transformed her into the green monster called Harpy, but she reverted back to humanity a few issues later.

As it turns out, her real—and seemingly permanent—super hero role would involve a totally different color.

Betty Ross first appeared as Red She-Hulk five years ago this month in HULK #15 by Jeph Loeb and Ian Churchill. She debuted on the last page of the issue, following Red Hulk’s vicious battle with Wolverine and X-Force.

Red She-Hulk held in her hands both Elektra’s sai and Domino’s laser gun, thus inferring that the savage new She-Hulk had defeated the two characters off-panel. When the action picked up in HULK #16, Wolverine got the upper hand—or claw—immediately.

The new Hulk on the block made short work of Wolverine, Deadpool, and the rest of her attackers. She escaped with the recently blinded Red Hulk by diving into the sewers.

The two tried to feel each other out, which proved to be a hard task as both Red Hulk and Red She-Hulk refused to reveal their secret identities to each other—or the audience. Red She-Hulk’s knowledge of war strategies surprised Red Hulk, and the newcomer also revealed that she had heard some of the elder Hulk’s anecdotes before. Before they could figure each other’s identities, the She-Hulk turned on the He-Hulk.

Red She-Hulk turned the anti-hero over to Thundra, Punisher, and Deadpool—three vigilantes that he had hired to hunt down X-Force and neglected to pay. HULK #17 started with the tables getting turned in a big way, as the Red Hulk revealed that his vision had returned.

The Red Hulk escaped with Red She-Hulk in hot pursuit. Their cat and mouse game led them to the top of the Empire State Building, where Red Hulk showed mercy by not throwing the other Hulk to her possible demise. Red She-Hulk appreciated the gesture, but did not reciprocate.

Red She-Hulk’s true identity would not be revealed until a year later in INCREDIBLE HULKS #609. With her big secret out in the open, Betty got involved with the wider Marvel Universe by serving as a member of the Defenders.

Bruce Banner's monstrous alter ego doesn't always go it alone, so relive some of his greatest partnerships!

Super heroes can overcome seemingly insurmountable odds, but every now and then even they need a helping hand.

The same goes for the Hulk, even if the jade giant would never admit it. Granted, nearly every interaction the green behemoth has with other Marvel heroes begins with an earth shaking skirmish. Heck, a lot of those interactions don’t even go past the introductory face punches; Bruce Banner’s made enemies out of quite a few heroes over the years. In the spirit of the Hulk’s upcoming team up with Tony Stark in the pages of ORIGINAL SIN: IRON MAN VS. HULK, we’ve assembled a list of five incredible Hulk team-ups presented in chronological order – and only a few of them involve bruised egos/bodies.

1. Hulk and the Avengers

Just a few months after tearing his way onto the scene, the Hulk found himself assembled along the rest of Marvel’s heavy-hitters in a battle against Loki, a manipulative Norse god. Yeah, Iron Man spent a good portion of this issue trying to convince the Hulk of his good intentions, and yes, the Green Goliath would hit the road one issue later in a huff, but for a few pages at the end of this milestone event, the Hulk could call four other heroes his allies.

2. Hulk and the Defenders

Defenders (1972) #1

The Hulk stuck it out a bit longer with his next super team, the Defenders. Banner found an unlikely home alongside Doctor Strange, Namor, and the Silver Surfer as that core quartet fought together to protect the world from strange threats. On their first mission, the team went up against Necrodamus, a sorcerer that sought to ascend to godhood through the use his black magic powers.

3. Hulk and Captain Universe

Incredible Hulk Annual (1968) #10

What is Marvel Unlimited?

Following a missile strike from an attacking jet, the Hulk and Bruce Banner found themselves temporarily separated. The split also came at the behest of the Uni-Power, a cosmic force that bestows the powers and title of Captain Universe upon those it deems necessary, as it merged with the freed Banner persona. The rampaging Hulk wasn’t exactly amicable toward Bruce in his Captain Universe form, but the two still managed to stop a nuclear missile from detonating.

4. Hulk and the new Fantastic Four

Fantastic Four (1961) #348

Fantastic Four (1961) #348

What is Marvel Unlimited?

As part of an elaborate Skrull plot, an alien posing as the Invisible Woman recruited the Hulk, then in his slightly more reasonable gray form, Ghost Rider, Spider-Man, and Wolverine to avenge the deaths of the allegedly deceased Fantastic Four. The group went on a mission that put them up against the Mole Man and his subterranean monsters and, eventually, against the manipulative imposter in their midst.

5. Hulk and Red She-Hulk

Incredible Hulks (2009) #628

  • Added to Marvel Unlimited: January 13, 2012
  • Rating: A
  • Writer: Greg Pak
  • Penciller: Tom Grummett
What is Marvel Unlimited?

Recently, Banner teamed up with his newly hulked-out ex-wife Betty Ross for an espionage-tinged mission against the immortal villain Tyrannus. After years separated by a galaxy, death, and misunderstandings, these two reconciled by including something not included in any other Hulk team-up on this list: some passionate lip locking.
