The second season will premiere later this year.

Disney XD and Marvel Entertainment today announced “Marvel’s Spider-Man” will be returning to the network for season two in 2018.

The second season of “Marvel’s Spider-Man” follows Peter Parker in his sophomore year as a more experienced Super Hero and a more confident student at what was once the intimidating Horizon High School. Picking up where season one left off – in an epic showdown against Doc Ock, the Sinister Five, and Hobgoblin – season two will offer much higher stakes for both Peter and his heroic alter-ego, Spider-Man. He’ll also learn how to navigate new responsibilities like working at his local newspaper The Daily Bugle while enduring Doc Ock’s series of obstacles in the villain’s attempt to get rid of Spider-Man once and for all. The action-packed season will continue to touch on Spidey’s relatable themes, including friendship, loyalty and heroism, while staying true to its signature sense of comedy. The premiere date for the series will be announced at a later date.

“Marvel’s Spider-Man” season two will join the previously announced “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout” and “Marvel’s Avengers: Black Panther’s Quest” which will be returning to Disney XD with new seasons in 2018.

Marc Buhaj, Senior Vice President, Programming and General Manager, Disney XD, said, “We’re proud of our partnership with Marvel Animation and look forward to premiering more adventure storytelling, through the lens of some of the world’s most prominent Super Heroes, for years to come.”

“We are tremendously proud of our animated series on Disney XD. We look forward to continuing our relationship with them including fresh new seasons of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout, Marvel’s Avengers: Black Panther’s Quest, and Marvel’s Spider-Man which will air through 2019,” said Dan Buckley, President, Marvel Entertainment.

Buckley continued, “As we continue to produce in the animation space, we are constantly looking to expand our footprint with projects such as the highly-anticipated Marvel Rising, and a second season of Marvel Super Hero Adventures. Additionally, we are pleased with the continual growth of Marvel HQ on YouTube Kids, which features library favorites and premiere episodes of Marvel Super Hero Adventures and the Marvel Funko animated shorts, as well as upcoming original content.”

The “Marvel’s Spider-Man” season two creative team includes executive producers Alan Fine (“Marvel’s The Avengers”), Joe Quesada (“Marvel’s Avengers Assemble”), Dan Buckley (“Marvel’s Avengers Assemble”), Cort Lane (“Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man,” “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble”), and Eric Radomski (“Spawn,” “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble”); co-executive producers Stan Lee (“Spider-Man”) and Marsha Griffin (“Transformers Prime”); supervising producers Kevin Burke and Chris “Doc” Wyatt (“Marvel’s Avengers Assemble,” “Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man”); consulting producer Dan Slott (“Spider-Man: Big Time,” “The Superior Spider-Man”); and supervising director Philip Pignotti (“Marvel’s Avengers Assemble”).

The soundtrack will be available the same day Season 2 debuts on Netflix.

Friday, June 22 will be a big day for “Marvel’s Luke Cage” fans, as not only will the second season be released on Netflix, but the Season 2 soundtrack will be available as well.

“Marvel’s Luke Cage” Season 2 Original Soundtrack Album features original score by returning composers Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) and Adrian Younge (Ghostface Killah, JAY-Z, Bilal, Souls of Mischief), who received critical acclaim for their Season 1 score.

For the second season, the composers desired to expand the sound and included a rhythm section and orchestra. Inspired by the new character Bushmaster, Muhammad and Younge created what they call “symphonic” reggae” for his theme, blending the soul of reggae music with an orchestra. Their inspirations for Season 2 included the films of Alfred Hitchcock and “Mission: Impossible,” plus the television series “Kojak,” “Baretta” and “The Incredible Hulk.”

In addition to the score, the album also includes licensed tracks plus the song “King’s Paradise,” performed in an episode by Rakim, which was written by William Griffin, Younge and Muhammad.

“Marvel’s Luke Cage” Season 2 Original Soundtrack Album cover

Also featured in an episode is R&B singer Joi performing “Love You Forever Right Now,” a song she co-wrote with Marlon Cox and Gabrielle Dennis (Tilda Johnson) performing “Family First,” a song co-written by Younge, Muhammad and Dennis, with vocals produced by “Marvel’s Luke Cage” showrunner/Executive Producer Cheo Hodari Coker. The soundtrack also includes two covers by teen blues guitarist Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, “I Put a Spell on You,” and “The Thrill is Gone.” All songs were composed and produced by Younge and Muhammad.

Said Coker, “If Season 1 was about the hip-hop and the Wu-Tangification of the Marvel Universe, Season 2 is about the ROOTS of hip-hop: reggae and the blues. How both smashed up against each other to create the sonic backdrop of what we now know as hip-hop. The rhythmic stew of funk, rhythm and blues, soul, melded with the Jamaican ‘DJ’ tradition. Harlem’s Paradise, which is tied to the family legacy of both Mariah Dillard Stokes and John ‘Bushmaster’ McGiver, is where the musical sensibilities of both clash. One of the secrets of the show is whoever looks down at the club from Cottonmouth’s ‘perch’ controls the music of the club and has reign over Harlem.

Coker continues, “The music selection and the sequencing is a labor of love, and is one of the most important things I do as showrunner of this show. I love the fact that all of musical sensibilities meld with our storytelling and dramatic desires as a writer’s room, cast, and production crew. I get to be both John Wells and Quincy Jones.”

In Season 2 of the Netflix original series, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) has become a celebrity on the streets of Harlem with a reputation as bulletproof as his skin. But being so visible has only increased his need to protect the community and find the limits of who he can and can’t save. With the rise of a formidable new foe, Luke is forced to confront the fine line that separates a hero from a villain. “Marvel’s Luke Cage” is rated TV-MA and is streaming now only on Netflix.

“Marvel’s Luke Cage” Season 2 Original Soundtrack Album will be available for download and at streaming services on June 22.
